Devarahubballi village in Dharwad has witnessed a tragedy when a 25 year old girl lost her life after receiving an electric shock while handling a water heater coil.
Nivedita (25) has been identified as the deceased. According to initial reports, she was heating water using a coil-type immersion heater, a household device commonly used in rural areas. After heating the water she tried to remove the coil and accidentally got hit by a live electrical current.
The electric shock sent her to collapse and her family members were in panic. Her relatives rushed her to a hospital right away to save her life. But doctors were not able to revive her and she was declared dead.
The incident is registered under the jurisdiction of Dharwad Rural Police Station. The accident is still being investigated by the police.
At the time of the mishap it seems the immersion heater was handled inappropriately and safety precautions were not taken into account. Experts are concerned that such devices can be very dangerous if not well maintained and one must be very cognizant that they are connected to a power source.
The unfortunate situation shows the dangers of using electrical appliances without any safety measures. Power supply must be turned off before touching or removing electrical heating devices, municipal authorities said.
The sudden death of the young woman has left her family and the local community in deep shock. Neighbors and relatives have expressed grief over the incident, describing it as a preventable tragedy.
Officials have advised the public to be cautious when using immersion heaters and other electrical appliances, they added. Basic safety measures turning off the switch, unplugging the device and keeping the hands dry when using the device so it won’t cause a major accident can decrease that kind of fatal accident, they added.
