An Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) team on Wednesday caught Keesara sub-inspector Gnanender Reddy in the act of accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh near Keesara lake during Ganesh immersion duty. The operation was carried out following a complaint that police officials had demanded money in connection with the provision of station bail to an accused.
According to information, Keesara Inspector A Anjaneyulu demanded ₹10 lakh to facilitate station bail for an accused. However, negotiations were made and the amount was reduced to ₹5 lakh, which was to be handed over to Sub-Inspector Gnanender Reddy.
The complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau and informed officials about the alleged demand. Based on the complaint, the ACB apparently planned a trap to catch the officer while accepting the money.
The trap was carried out near Keesara lake, where Reddy was deployed for Ganesh immersion duty, according to local sources. According to officials, he arrived in a car and obtained ₹5 lakh from the complainant. ACB officials monitoring the transaction then intervened and caught him receiving the money.
It was also reported by media reports that Reddy tried to flee after seeing the ACB officials. However, the officers caught him during the operation.
The complaint also included repeated requests for food and beverages. The complainant told the ACB that police personnel had allegedly been asking him to bring biryanis and cool drinks over several days. Those allegations were also part of the circumstances that led the complainant to approach the anti-corruption agency.
The alleged bribe demand was connected to the complainant's problems in the case of chemical tests. The complainant claimed to be subjected to repeated demands and pressure in connection with the matter.
Following the trap, ACB officials continued their investigation by conducting searches at Keesara police station as well as at the residences of the officers concerned. ACB Deputy Superintendent of Police Majeed Ali Khan was in charge of the searches.
