On 12th February, 2019, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) held a consultative meeting with candidates who lost in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections and party members to strengthen the party organisation and prepare for elections in 2024.
The meeting was held at Bharat Jodo Bhavan at the KPCC office under the leadership of KPCC president B.K. Hariprasad. Senior Congress leaders, former ministers, legislators and the party’s defeated candidates participated in the discussions.
The Party Organisation and Election Preparation
The meeting was also said to have been about addressing several major organisational and electoral issues facing the Congress in Karnataka. Preparation for local bodies elections and how to strengthen the party at the grassroots was discussed.
During the meeting the SIR process was also discussed. Party leaders and candidates discussed it and how it might be a factor in electoral preparations.
The discussions are important as political parties in Karnataka are in the midst of various elections. The Congress will need to work hard to strengthen the party machinery at the local level, as it will need to keep its organisational reach in the state, and the Congress will be able to organise more effectively and strengthen it in the state.
Defeated Candidates Take Part
Candidates who competed in the 2023 Assembly elections on Congress tickets but were unsuccessful were invited to the consultation meeting.
The participation of these candidates allowed the party leadership to get feedback from leaders who had directly participated in elections in different constituencies.
Defeated candidates are part of the party’s organisational structure, especially in constituencies where the Congress is looking to improve its electoral performance.
Their feedback can help the party determine local problems, concerns of voters, organisational deficiencies and areas that need the party to pay more attention.
Senior Leaders Attend Meeting
The consultation was attended by AICC secretaries including Gopinath Palaniappan and former ministers, MLAs and defeated Congress candidates.
The presence of senior leaders is indicative of the importance of the organisational strengthening and election preparedness discussions.
The meeting also provided leaders at different levels of the party with a forum to discuss constituency issues and how to build the Congress network.
Preparing for Local Body elections
With local body elections going to be a very active political exercise, parties are attempting to strengthen their grassroots networks to gain more grassroots support.
For the Congress, local-level organisation will be particularly important in ensuring coordination between district, taluk, block and booth-level workers.
The consultation with former Assembly election candidates in the party might help the party to identify areas for improvement before these elections to be addressed in the months to come.
Local elections are also a time when political parties have to measure their organisational strength and public support at the grassroots level.
Strengthening the Party
The discussions covered party organization in detail (the leaders were working to improve coordination and strengthen the Congress structure).
For candidates who have already contested Assembly elections, the continued involvement in party activities can maintain the Congress presence in their respective constituency.
Thus the consultation meeting was a feedback exercise and part of the party’s larger preparations for future political challenges.
The leadership of the Congress will continue to hold discussions with party workers, elected representatives and former candidates as it works on its organisational strategy.
The meeting at Bharat Jodo Bhavan also shows the party's efforts to bring together senior leaders and grassroots-level electoral representatives.
And as preparations for local body elections are ongoing, the Congress is likely to focus more on booth-level organisation, voter outreach and strengthening its presence across constituencies.
