According to preliminary evidence, the woman entered the BMTC bus like any other passenger. She took advantage of a moment when the conductor was busy issuing tickets and is accused of stealing the conductor's cash bag containing the day's ticket collection.

Conductor Notices Suspicious Behaviour

Officials said the conductor soon noticed that the cash bag was missing and immediately began checking the bus. At the same time, he found the woman acting suspiciously and attempting to leave the bus.

The conductor realized something was wrong, and so he blocked her from getting off the bus and alerted the bus driver. Then the bus was stopped, and the police were informed of the theft.

Cash Bag Recovered

Police were on the spot and searched bus staff and passengers. The cash bag was allegedly recovered from the woman’s handbag during the inspection.

The bag was recovered; the theft had taken place inside the bus. The woman was detained and taken into custody for questioning.

The amount of cash recovered from the bag has not yet been disclosed.

Police Investigation Underway

A case has been registered, and the police have started an investigation into the exact sequence of events.

Investigators are investigating whether the woman acted alone or was part of a larger gang targeting conductors and passengers on public transport. CCTV footage from the bus, if available, and statements from the conductor, driver, and passengers who witnessed the incident are also to be recorded.

The allegations are still being investigated, and there will be due process, the attorneys added, that will determine the woman’s legal liability for her actions.

Growing Concern Over Theft in Public Transport

The incident has revived fears of theft on city buses, where crowded conditions are a breeding ground for pickpockets and other offenders.

Police advise commuters and transport workers to be vigilant when travelling and handling valuables. Cash bags should be kept secure at all times for conductors, and passengers should also protect their wallets, mobile phones, and handbags at all times, especially during peak travel times.

It also advised people to report suspicious behaviour or theft to the conductor, driver, or the nearest police station immediately.

Public Cooperation Essential

BMTC officials said cooperation between passengers and transport staff is essential to prevent such crimes. Fast reporting and swift action by bus staff would help prevent the suspects from escaping and help in the investigation.

The woman is still under investigation; further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
