One life was lost, and 26 were injured after a private passenger bus in Kerala's Malappuram district fell off the road when the rains washed out the road and overturned in a tragic accident on a rainy highway near Kutippuram.
According to preliminary information, the private bus was travelling along its regular route when it approached a dangerous curve near Kutippuram. Heavy rain made driving hazardous. Witnesses and initial police observations show that the bus was going at a speed greater than was considered safe in the weather conditions.
The driver tried to brake the bus as it entered the curve, but the tyres did not have the grip on the wet surface of the road. The bus may have been aquaplaning, a condition where the tyres can’t touch the road and the vehicle loses control and skids off the road before overturning, investigators said.
The impact was heavy. Passengers in the bus were thrown from their seats as windows shattered during the rollover. One passenger died on the spot due to serious injuries, and 26 others sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency workers trapped some victims in the overturned vehicle until residents rushed to help.
In a flash, they were at the accident site immediately after the loud crash when they heard it, and were able to reach the accident site in time and rescue people from the accident site. They broke open damaged windows and opened doors to get people to the rescue before emergency services arrived.
Police, fire and rescue personnel and ambulance teams soon arrived and immediately went out to the scene and staged a rescue operation. They took the injured to hospitals in Kutippuram and Malappuram for treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed the victims suffered serious injuries and are in intensive medical care and remain in stable condition, hospital officials said.
The accident has led authorities to investigate the exact cause of the accident. Heavy rainfall and slippery road conditions are said to be factors in the accident, but investigators are also looking into whether overspeeding, mechanical failure or driver error could be involved.
Aquaplaning is one of the biggest risks during the monsoon. When water accumulates on the road surface in the rain, tyres lose traction and can glide over the water rather than grip the asphalt. This drastically reduces steering control and braking efficiency, especially when moving through fast roads or negotiating a bend.
The accident serves as a reminder to drivers to be extremely careful during the rainy season. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, drive according to the weather conditions, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, check tyre condition regularly, be sure to use headlights and windscreen wipers, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on wet roads.
Residents have also asked highway authorities to implement more safety measures at accident-prone sites by installing more warning signs, reflective markers, speed control measures and better drainage systems to minimise water accumulation on road surfaces.
The Kerala Police and district administration have asked the public to put safety ahead of speed during the monsoon. As investigations continue, the focus remains on identifying measures that can help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
