Love Over Society: A Boy’s Courageous Proposal Defies Social Norms

“If an individual loves someone, he or she is defying tradition and social norms and is defying family and the whole family,” said Love. Recently, though, a story of a young man and girl selling sandwiches has caught many hearts. The boy came from a rich family, and had been in love with her for one and a half years. The appointment did not go well when it came time to introduce her to his mother for marriage. Still, what ensued was a moment of strength, love and defiance in the face of traditional social orders.

The boy decided to drive his mother to the same place the girl worked selling sandwiches on the street. He wanted his mother to know her as she was, as hard-working and honest as she lived. But instead of admiration, his mother responded disapprovingly. She could not accept her girl of her choosing as future daughter-in-law simply because of her occupation. For the mother, social recognition and status were more important than love. She reasoned that marrying a girl who sold sandwiches would bring shame on the family. Her words mirror the thinking of many who rate an individual by their labor and work rather than their moral fiber.

The boy made an effort to reason with his mother. He reminded her that his grandfather was not wealthy either, yet his father married her. He had made the point: that love and respect should be measured in a way that was not based on wealth or status. Nevertheless, his mother would not budge, asserting: "Your father and I get respect in society. What will people say if we give a sandwich-selling girl to become our daughter-in-law?” This hurt the boy a lot. He believed his mother more valued society’s opinions than he did his happiness.

The boy was making a bold decision on that day. In front of everyone he stood in the middle of the road, turning to the girl and giving her his proposal. His was a love statement as well as a rejection of shallow social judgments. By courage and sincerity, the girl also welcomed his proposal. The boy then glanced at his mother and said, “Your society is over for you. For me, my love comes first.” The message of its words had far more teeth that love cannot be traded for the sake of social acceptance.

This narrative illustrates the push-and-pull of happiness versus society. Most families still think, for instance, marriage should be based on wealth or status or profession. But the boy’s refusal of it reveals love, even on a small scale, that most importantly regards honesty and hard work and character, and values others.” The couple also challenged that of love needing to conform to these narrow descriptions of love in a public proposal. He showed that dignity is not derived from money or esteem but from respect, compassion, and courage.

Following are some important lessons from this incident:

  • Love is based on character, not status. The girl’s toil selling sandwiches couldn’t make her any less deserving of respect.
  • Courage matters. The courageous boy standing up to both his mother and society.
  • Society should evolve. Judging your people by the profession or their income is unfair and out-of-date.
  • Respect for hard work. Every position should be taken with dignity, and those who work it out properly deserve to be admired.

On that day, the boy chose love over everything else. His proposal was not only part of a personal decision to him as a boy, but also an expression against prejudice and social pressure. He loved first, he wouldn't let antiquated ideas of respect stop him from being happy. Through this story we’re reminded that real strength doesn’t come in the form of money or the means to an end, but in the ability to listen to the hearts of others and the respect toward people for who they are. When love often takes a backseat to societal stature, the courageous thing the boy did is a testament to how love transcends boundaries and brings about change.
