Lucknow: 7 Killed, Over 20 Injured as Speeding Double-Decker Bus Overturns near Jaunkhandi

On Monday evening, there was a terrible crash on the road that killed at least seven people and injured more than 20 others, when a sleeper coach double-decker bus lost control and overturned near Jaunkhandi village. The crash occurred in the evening hours, as a fast-paced high-capacity bus appeared to have struggled to pass through part of the road. The impact was so severe that the vehicle flipped multiple times before stopping, ensnaring some passengers in ragged remnants of the sleeper berths.

Emergency Response and Rescue Operations

Community of Jaunkhandi village quickly came to the scene to carry the surviving survivors out of the accident scene soon afterwards. Not long after, the emergency response, including local police and medical units, arrived to undertake a large rescue.

  • Fatalities: Officials confirmed 7 deaths at the crash site.
  • Injuries: There were a number of minor fractures and some were critical injuries and over 20 passengers were receiving treatment at the time of the incident.
  • Hospitalisation: The injured were taken to nearby trauma centers and government hospitals in Lucknow for urgent medical treatment.

Investigation into the Cause

Eyewitness accounts have first indications excessive speeding was the cause of the tragedy. In attempting to maneuver a corner or to avoid an obstacle, the driver reportedly lost control of the heavy vehicle, ending with the fatal overturn.

"The bus was a very fast one. We heard a loud thump and then screams. Before ambulances arrived, we attempted to extract as many people as we could," said a local eyewitness who took part in the first rescue.

The Need of Double-Decker Coaches for Safety

Moreover, this incident is adding to fears over the safety of private double-decker sleeper buses, which take the skies on Uttar Pradesh’s highways. Such vehicles have high centers of gravity, and so they flip over in the dark especially. Officials are likely to follow up with a formal investigation into the bus operator’s credentials and the mechanical condition of the vehicle.
