The nomination process for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections started in Lucknow on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The nomination papers of the candidates are received at the Divisional Commissioner’s office.
The nomination venue in the Kaiserbagh area was under increased security arrangements on the first day of the process. Entry was only allowed after checking at the gate and barricades around the premises were put up.
The election process covers the Lucknow Graduate and Lucknow Teacher constituencies, among other graduate and teacher constituencies of Uttar Pradesh.
As a result, security was stepped up around the nomination venues.
Security was reinforced around the Divisional Commissioner’s office as nominations were put into place. People were being checked before entrance into the place for that to be possible, Amar Ujala reported on September 29, and barricades were in place.
The traffic in and around the office also changed during the nomination process. Restrictions were to remain in effect as nominations were done and other routes were set up for commuters.
The arrangements are intended to regulate movement around the nomination venue and maintain order during the filing process.
Nomination Deadline Is October 6
According to the election schedule, candidates could submit their nomination papers until October 6, 2026. The nomination papers will then be examined on October 7.
The candidates who wish to withdraw from the contest can do so until October 9. After the withdrawal deadline, the final list of candidates will be clear.
The Election Commission has scheduled voting for October 23, and counting on October 27. The terms of the 11 sitting MLCs whose seats are part of this election cycle are due to end on December 6, 2026.

11 Legislative Council seats in Poll schedule
The current election process for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council covers 11 seats—five graduate and six teacher constituencies.
The graduate constituencies are Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, and Allahabad-Jhansi. The teacher constituencies are Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Bareilly-Moradabad, and Gorakhpur-Faizabad.
Candidates are required to submit the nomination forms, and recognised political parties have to provide the documents for their nominees.
