A planned ATM robbery in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district was foiled after the bank’s e-surveillance system detected suspicious activity and alerted officials. According to local reports, two men had entered a UCO Bank ATM in Marwar Mundwa with a gas cutter and other tools but they were caught before they could access the cash.
According to reports published on Sept 28 and 29, 2026, the incident took place late on Sunday night, September 27, and continued into the early hours of Monday, September 28. The suspects entered the ATM booth at around 2:13 am, the police said.
E-Surveillance System Sends Alert
The attempted robbery apparently began when the two men entered the ATM and started trying to damage the machine. They had a gas cutter and other equipment that could be used to open the ATM.
The bank's e-surveillance system detected suspicious activity and sent an alert to the bank's regional security officer in Ajmer. The officer then contacted the branch manager, Sarika Chaudhary, who lived with her family in quarters above the bank.
The ATM was reported to have more than ₹16 lakh in cash that was placed there ahead of a proposed bank strike.
Bank Manager Reaches ATM With Husband
After getting the alert, Chaudhary went to the ATM with her husband. When they went in the booth, they saw that the shutter was down and the suspects were inside.
The manager and her husband pulled the shutter down completely and locked the two men inside the booth. She then contacted the Marwar Mundwa police.
This gave the police an opportunity to reach the location while the suspects were still inside the ATM.
Two Suspects Arrested at the Spot
Police arrived soon after receiving the information and arrested the two men from inside the ATM booth.
The suspects were identified as Bharat Prajapat, a Mundwa resident who runs a roadside eatery, and Komal Kumar Rajput, who is a worker with him at his restaurant and belongs to Bihar. Police also seized the cutting equipment and other tools used in the attempted robbery, the report said.
Police are investigating whether anyone else was involved, it said. They also say the two men arrived on a motorcycle belonging to another person, whom the police asked people to question.

CCTV Camera Also Reportedly Targeted
According to Amar Ujala, the suspects had damaged the ATM's upper cover and tried to interfere with the CCTV camera by applying grease and cutting its connectivity wire. But they failed to reach the ATM’s cash compartment before the e-surveillance alert brought them down.
Quick Alert Prevents Major Loss
The incident demonstrates how monitoring systems can be used by banks to detect suspicious activity and in this case the alert reached bank officials as the alleged robbery was still in progress.
The suspects were caught before they had the chance to take the money and the bank's money was safe, police said. Police are still investigating whether there were others involved in the attempted ATM robbery.
