Lucknow Plans 7.5-km Gomti Sports Corridor Along Riverfront to Boost Recreation and Tourism

Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has presented a proposal to develop a 7.5-kilometre Gomti Sports Corridor along the banks of the Gomti River near Rashtra Prerna Sthal, a further step in the city’s urban transformation. The ambitious project aims to create a modern recreational and sports hub while enhancing the riverfront’s appeal as a destination for residents, athletes, and tourists.

The proposed Gomti Sports Corridor will integrate fitness infrastructure, open public spaces, and sustainable urban design of the city into a single integrated project. The corridor will offer a place for sports lovers of all ages, and the river Gomti is still truly beautiful.

The sports corridor will also include jogging, cycling, walking, outdoor fitness activities, and recreational sports facilities, an assessment says. Tracks for runners and cyclists, natural green areas, children's play areas, exercise stations, and seating spaces could be included. Authorities hope to create venues for community sporting events, cultural activities, and wellness programs.

One of the primary objectives of the project is to encourage public engagement in fitness and recreation. As urban populations multiply, accessible open spaces have become increasingly important for physical and mental health. The Gomti Sports Corridor aims to meet this need by providing a safe, attractive, and inclusive environment for exercise and leisure.

The corridor is also expected to enhance Lucknow's tourism profile. The Gomti Riverfront is already one of the city’s most popular attractions, and having modern sports and recreational facilities in place can only enhance its popularity. Walkways, cycling routes, riverfront views, lush gardens, family getaways, and community gathering places may be available to tourists.

Environmental sustainability will form the basis of the project development and execution. The Lucknow Development Authority will have to maintain the river ecosystem through extensive landscaping, tree plantations, eco-friendly construction techniques, improved drainage systems, and responsible waste management. Such measures would ensure ecological balance while a very lively public space is established.

The integration of sports infrastructure with riverfront development is seen by urban planning experts as a forward-thinking way of planning. Similar projects in other countries have transformed waterfronts into beautiful public spaces that promote health, tourism, environmental conservation, and local economic activity.

The concept of the development could also generate jobs during the construction phase and later in maintenance, hospitality, tourism, and sports-related services. Once the corridor opens, local businesses, food outlets, recreational operators, and event organizers may benefit from increased visitor footfall.

The project is in line with the state’s wider vision of modernizing the city, improving the quality of life and helping it to be more sustainable in the future (e.g., improving the city’s infrastructure, developing rivers, parks and sports fields).

Although it is still being studied, the proposal reflects Lucknow’s vision of a greener, healthier and more vibrant city. Details on project development, environmental assessments, and funding approval will be crucial to the next phases of development before construction begins.

If implemented according to the vision, the 7.5 km Gomti Sports Corridor would be one of Lucknow’s most iconic public spaces with sports, recreation, nature and tourism for residents and visitors. It would transform the riverfront of Lucknow, promote community engagement and sustainable urban growth, and change the way we think about the city.
