A death in Priya Steel Factory in Hunsyal P.G. village of Karnataka's Belagavi district that was initially reported as an accidental fall was confirmed as murder after an investigation by the police. The incident was detected by the police in the vicinity of Ghataprabha Police Station as injuries of the deceased were not in line with the initial story of an accidental fall onto a metal rod. A suspect has been detained for the murder.
The deceased was Sikta Ramchandra Dev, a native of Pilibhit district, Uttar Pradesh. He was working at the steel factory and had been staying in a shed on the premises along with four to five workers, said police. The circumstances of the incident changed after the victim was admitted to the hospital with a serious chest injury, said the police.
On August 23, the worker was rushed from the factory to a hospital due to the serious injury. At that time, it was claimed that the incident was an accident, the victim had fallen on a rod. Medical personnel treated him for the injury but his condition was still very serious. He died due to severe blood loss. After the death, an MLC was registered and the investigation on the injury was brought forward.
The investigation took a serious turn when police investigated the wound. The deceased had a single deep stab injury caused by a sharp weapon. The severity and magnitude of the injury ruled out the possibility that the death had resulted from an accidental fall onto a rod and police investigated the possibility of a deliberate attack.
Belagavi Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan provided details about the investigation and the nature of the purported incident. Sikta Ramchandra Dev was living in a shed at the factory with several workers, the police said. The workers spent time together during the day outside their work hours and investigators are investigating the events that took place in a group shortly before the fatal injury, Ramarajan said.
Workers had drunk alcohol and cooked chicken together on a Sunday. According to the police, there was a dispute over the food. Sikta Ramchandra Dev was stabbed with a sharp weapon in the entire incident. Although the exact sequence of events is still being investigated, police have arrested Arun Kumar, who is apparently from Pilibhit district in Uttar Pradesh, in connection with the case.
The arrest is a game changer in the investigation because it is the first time police have the chance to know what happened in the factory before the worker got injured.
