A tragic accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Agar Malwa district killed eight people after a car carrying devotees was swept away by the strong current of a drain near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda after heavy rainfall caused the drain near the temple to swell, and the vehicle was caught in the fast moving water.
According to media reports, the victims had traveled to Nalkheda to visit the famous Maa Baglamukhi Temple. They were in the car when they came across the overflowing drain near the temple premises. The water swept the car away and killed all the people inside.
The accident took place in Agar Malwa district where rains in the night caused water in the local drainage channel to rise rapidly. Hindustan Times reported that the rainfall on 24th November was 37 mm in the last 24 hours in the district administration's area according to Hindustan Times.
The rainwater has raised the flow in the drain near the temple and vehicles going to the temple, which is dangerous for them to cross.
The vehicle was swept away by the force of the water after it crossed the rainwater drain, the report said. Police and local administrative officials immediately went to the scene and started rescue operations. Teams worked to find the vehicle and get them out of the drain. They were finally pulled out, but the eight occupants could not be saved.
The incident has focused attention on the risks of swollen drains and waterlogged crossings during heavy rainfall. Local people spoke to residents about the lack of crossing facilities near the temple and called for better infrastructure in the area, local media reported.
Local people protested following the accident and asked for improvements in safety for visitors coming to the temple’s vicinity, some media said.

The identities and details of the victims were still being confirmed in initial reports. One report said the group consisted of seven members of a family from Odisha and a taxi driver, and other early reports were less specific about the victims’ identities.
