A report released on September 19, 2026, said Akash Deep has regained red-ball fitness after a long rehabilitation period and is now being considered for India's plans for the New Zealand Tests.

Akash Deep Returns to Red-Ball Fitness.

After a lower-back stress injury, Akash Deep has been sidelined from competitive cricket for a number of months. Rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru is ongoing.

The Bengal pacer has gradually increased his bowling workload and is now bowling extended spells as part of his return to Test-match fitness. This is an important stage because Test cricket demands the ability to bowl repeatedly over several days.

The report said Akash has been bowling up to around 15 overs in a day during his rehabilitation and preparation.

New Zealand Conditions Could Suit Akash.

India's upcoming New Zealand tour will be a very good opportunity for Akash Deep to embark upon his comeback from the injury.

New Zealand conditions are traditionally associated with assistance for swing and seam bowling, particularly for fast bowlers who can extract movement and maintain disciplined lines.

Akash had also performed admirably on India’s previous overseas Test assignments and has a reputation for hitting the pitch hard and generating movement. He could provide India with a solid addition to the experienced pacers by bowling long spells.

Irani Cup Will Be Important Test.

Despite Akash’s re-election being reported, it is not yet clear if he will come back.

He is selected in the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup, which is played against Ranji Trophy champions Jammu and Kashmir from October 1 to 5. But Telegraph India reported on September 17 that Akash must first clear a fitness test before taking part in the match.

That game could therefore become an important opportunity for the pacer to prove his match fitness after his long absence.

India Could Welcome Another Pace Option.

Akash Deep's return would give India's selectors another fast bowler to choose for the New Zealand Tests.

India has established pacers in the wider Test setup, but workloads are critical at a demanding international stage. A fit Akash could provide additional depth and allow the team to consider different combinations depending on conditions.

His performance in domestic cricket and the Irani Cup could also determine his chances of returning to the national side.
