Madurai, Tamil Nadu: Madurai celebrated the 107th birthday of the iconic banyan tree on Sunday, a surprise to many people in India, to honour its contribution to the environment and to our local community. Instead of celebrating a person’s birthday, people in the city sang to one of nature’s oldest living treasures, cut the cake, and participated in awareness programs that conservation of the environment is important.
The unique event highlighted the growing appreciation for trees and their role in sustaining life, reminding people that nature deserves gratitude and protection.
A Birthday Celebration Unlike Any Other
The towering banyan tree, which is thought to be over 107 years old, was festively decorated with flower garlands when students, environmentalists, scientists, and residents gathered around the massive tree canopy.
The tree’s birthday celebration started with a group singing “Happy Birthday,” and then a cake was cut to commemorate the tree’s long lifespan of more than a century.
Children, senior citizens, and families all came along, and it was such a great event that mixed joy with an important environmental message.
After the cake-cutting ceremony, sweets were distributed to those in attendance, and students presented placards on the importance of protecting trees and green spaces.
