The Shri Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh (AMP), has introduced new technology to evaluate the quality of gold and silver donations for the first time. The temple installed a karatometer worth approximately ₹15 lakh, enabling officials to determine the purity of the gold and silver in 30 seconds with a high degree of accuracy.
This is to make the temple donation process more transparent and to guarantee devotees get a credible assessment of the jewellery and precious metals that they donate.
Technology for Testing Accuracy
The new karatometer is equipped with X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) technology, a non-destructive method widely used in the jewellery industry to determine the composition and purity of precious metals.
XRF technology checks the metal without damage to the jewellery in a way that is different from traditional testing methods that may require scratching or cutting a sample.
The machine will provide information about the purity and composition of the donated gold or silver within 30 seconds.
Improving Transparency in Donations
The temple authorities said the machine was to help in transparency and accuracy in evaluating offerings made by devotees.
Gold and silver ornaments donated at the temple will now be tested immediately, and officials will be able to accurately record the purity of each item before it is added to the temple's assets.
The technology also removes the uncertainty of valuation and gives more confidence on the part of donors to hand over the money.
Part of the Existing Evaluation System
The karatometer will work with the existing procedures of the temple to evaluate and record donations.
Instead of replacing the current system with the machine, it enhances the system by providing scientifically verified purity results that will be useful for documentation and inventory management.
The temple will also add advanced testing equipment that will be more efficient in terms of the donation process and still be accountable.
