The Maharashtra Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) 2026, which was due to be held on Sunday, June 28, has been postponed due to the leak of the question paper almost 24 hours before the exam. The decision by MSEC on Saturday has affected more than 4.28 lakh aspiring teachers who were expected to appear for the exam at 1,028 centres in the state.
The postponement was necessary in order to keep the examination transparent and maintain the integrity of the examination process, the council said, as well as to do a full investigation into the paper leak.
Paper Leak Unearthed During Police Raid
According to the Maharashtra State Examination Council, the leak occurred after the Bhiwandi Police received confidential information early on Saturday. Based on the tip-off, police searched a place where several people were found to have pages from the sealed TET 2026 question paper packet.
The officials of the examination council were immediately called to verify the recovered documents. After checking their authenticity, a criminal case was registered at the Bhiwandi Police Station and an investigation was initiated.
Earlier reports had indicated that the leaked paper had appeared in the Thane region nearly a day before the scheduled examination. During the operation, police detained several suspects, but their identities have not yet been made public.

Lakhs of Aspirants Await Fresh Exam Date
With the examination postponed at the last moment, more than 4.28 lakh candidates are waiting for a revised schedule. The Maharashtra State Examination Council has assured candidates that a new date of examination will be announced on its website after the investigation is complete.
The incident has also raised questions about the security of competitive examinations in the state. In 2025, a similar controversy erupted when the Maharashtra TET question paper was leaked in Kolhapur, raising questions about the safeguards in place to prevent such breaches.
Meanwhile, Nagpur District Primary Education Officer Nilesh Gund said he had not received any official communication about the postponement or cancellation of the examination in Nagpur at the time of his statement. Also, he had no confirmed information about reports of a paper leak in other parts of Maharashtra.
Police are still investigating how the sealed question paper was accessed, who is to blame, and if there is a larger examination paper leak network at work behind the incident.
