The water supply disruption is due to maintenance works being carried out at a key electrical substation, which supplies power to the pumping station that supplies water to Mandya city. The pumping station is located near Srirangapatna, which is located on the outskirts of the city and is responsible for providing drinking water to millions of people.

The maintenance work will be done by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) at the 66/11 KV power substation that supplies electricity to the pumping facility. Repair work is necessary to ensure the smooth and reliable functioning of the electrical infrastructure, officials said.

As part of the maintenance, power supply to the pumping station will be temporarily suspended. With electricity for the pumps and the water distribution system dependent on electricity, the shutdown will have a direct impact on the water supply network of the city.

The maintenance work will take place on June 11 between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. In these 8 hours, pumping will be suspended, and the water will not be distributed.

The Assistant Executive Engineer of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam's Mandya Sub-Division has said that residents should expect disruptions in water supply on June 11 and June 12. The impact may continue beyond the maintenance cycle as reservoirs, overhead tanks, and distribution networks are still not operational in the vicinity of pumping.

The announcement has led local authorities to advise residents to be cautious. Water storage should be done in advance so that citizens can drink water during the day to cook, bathe, wash, etc.

This disruption is short-term and necessary for infrastructure maintenance, officials said, but they also conceded that it could cause inconvenience at times when water demand is high during the day, when it is most in demand.

Residents living in areas where water pressure is low are advised to be particularly cautious, and sufficient storage should be prepared before the scheduled maintenance starts. Apartment complexes, commercial establishments, schools, hospitals, and businesses should be made aware that they need to plan for water during the period that is required and do everything they can.

The announcement comes at a time when many cities in Karnataka are focusing on infrastructure reliability via preventive maintenance and upgrades. Power and water utilities often coordinate such activities to reduce the chance of unexpected breakdowns that could result in longer and more severe disruptions.

The local authorities have assured the public that every effort will be made to complete the maintenance work within the scheduled timeframe. Once the repairs are completed and the power supply is restored, pumping operations will resume immediately to restore normal water distribution across Mandya city.

Until then, residents are required to use water wisely and avoid waste. If they store sufficient water in advance, the disruption will be mitigated, and daily lives can be continued without inconvenience.

When the maintenance work is due on June 11, Mandya residents are advised to act quickly and prepare ahead of time to avoid having water shortages over the next two days.
