Ullal police have arrested two men, one reported rowdy-sheeter, for a purported public disturbance with a sword at Thokkottu in Mangaluru early on Sunday. The accused were arrested after it was alleged they started a disturbance by brandishing a sword and threatening people who were there in the early hours of Sunday.
The arrested men have been identified as 31-year-old Mohammed Shakir (Margathale in Ullal) and 28-year-old Ashfaq (Manchila). Shakir works as a welder while Ashfaq is an auto-rickshaw driver, the police said.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when Shakir arrived at Thokkottu in an auto-rickshaw driven by Ashfaq, Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H said. Shakir was carrying a sword and started creating a disturbance in the area, he said.
Investigators said Shakir was inebriated at the time of the incident. He brandished the sword and threatened people in the vicinity, causing worry among citizens, said the report.
After receiving news of the incident, Ullal police began to trace the individuals involved. Shakir and Ashfaq were arrested for their involvement in the incident.
The case is registered under provisions of the Arms Act and other relevant sections of law. The investigation is focused on establishing the exact circumstances surrounding the alleged sword-brandishing incident, the involvement of both accused persons and whether any members of the public were directly threatened or placed at risk.
