A disturbing video of a group of men throwing stones at a moving freight train in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, according to local media, has spread across social media, alarming railway safety and public safety officials.
The incident reportedly took place near Alopibagh and was posted online early in the morning. The footage shows people walking on the railway track, throwing stones at a yellow freight train passing by. Even though the train is out of sight, people are throwing stones, and there are real safety issues about the railway tracks.
Even though the train was a goods train and not a passenger train, many social media users were quick to point out that such reckless actions could have disastrous consequences if done against passenger trains. Stone-pelting at moving trains has previously resulted in injuries to passengers, damaged windows, and disturbances to railway services.
Based on the video circulated on WhatsApp, users tagged Uttar Pradesh Police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to call for immediate action against those who were involved.
Many users asked the authorities to locate the accused using local CCTV cameras and other surveillance systems. Some also suggested that police should be more alert and watch for the security of railway officers to patrol the city to ensure security in at-risk areas of the railway and impose severe penalties to prevent a similar incident in the future.
The viral video has also revived conversations about frequent stone-pelting around railway track locations in parts of the country. Such actions are not only vandalism but also a danger to passengers, railway workers, and public property, said citizens.

As of late Saturday, no official statement had been issued by the police, Indian Railways, or Railway Protection Force on the incident. There were no injuries, derailments, or damage to the freight train.
So authorities will review the viral footage to determine if they are going to open an investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
That’s why rail safety is very important, and stronger penalties on those who harm people and the economy are needed.
