A 45-year-old mother and her 21-year-old son graduated from IIT Madras (Indian Institute of Technology Madras) and are happy to know that knowledge is not age-based at all. Their achievements are a symbol of determination, lifelong learning, and the power education brings to life for all, which will be the cause of education to stay with me in my life. Graduation ceremonies at IIT Madras are usually celebrated, but this year’s ceremony is a very special one because the mother and son were so close, and they got to receive their degrees on the same day for the family and the university.
For the inspiring couple whose educational journey IIT Madras brought in a lot of different duties and also the same goal, returning to college after so many years was an accomplishment and it took great effort and discipline. Family life and doing the coursework, assignments, exams, and studying and daily life is always quite a hard task. She did not let age stop her learning at all, and that is why I never let age stop me from doing good (learning) or doing good (working).
For her son, graduating alongside his mother was a source of pride and motivation. Instead of competing with one another, they encouraged each other throughout their academic journey. They had study schedules, discussed assignments, motivated one another during the hard times, and celebrated every academic milestone together. Their shared dedication, in turn, made education a family affair that enhanced their bond outside the classroom.
The story resonated widely on social media, where thousands of users praised the duo for overturning the traditional notion of education. Many said the mother’s achievement was an inspiration for women who had been forced to put education aside for family life, professional life, or personal life. And the son’s encouragement and support, they said, was an example of how families can motivate each other to achieve great things.
For students from different age groups, professions, and regions, the mother and son’s journey is indicative of a growing interest in lifelong learning, which is a new way of learning and knowledge acquisition.
Education professionals believe that lifelong learning is a necessity in today’s fast-changing world, even more so. Technological advancements, changing industries, and changing job markets need professionals to have new skills, and education is no longer just about age or phase of life, but is a continuous journey in life and career which can be so important.
The mother and son were very emotional at the graduation ceremony. Their achievements can be viewed as proof that persistence, hard work, and mutual support can overcome age differences and life’s hardships, and the other students, faculty, and fellow graduates were proud of them.
The inspiring story has also stimulated conversations about teaching adults to go back to school and pursue their education. Money, employment, marriage, or caregiving are the reasons people drop out. But with options for flexible learning, online courses, and hybrid educational models, continuing education is now far more accessible.
