Mumbai Water Cut Dec 8-9: 17 Wards to Face 15% Reduction for 24 Hours; Check Affected Areas

Residents across a vast swathe of Mumbai, including the island city and its suburbs, have been advised to brace for a 15% water cut spanning 24 hours from December 8 to December 9, 2025. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is imposing the cut to carry out crucial repair and replacement work on a major water supply line.

The disruption will be in effect from 10 am on Monday, December 8, 2025, until 10 am on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Reason for the Disruption

The BMC is undertaking essential work to replace a large section of the 2,750 mm diameter Tansa water pipeline. This vital channel supplies water from the Tansa Dam to the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant (WTP), one of the city's primary water sources.

The 24-hour operation involves removing the old section and installing a new pipeline to ensure the long-term resilience and stability of Mumbai’s water network. During this period, the supply reaching the Bhandup WTP will be temporarily reduced by 15%, affecting downstream distribution.

Areas to be Impacted

The 15% water cut will be implemented across 17 administrative wards in the city, covering significant parts of the island city, Western Suburbs, and Eastern Suburbs.

Division Affected Wards Key Areas Included
Island City A, C, D, G/South, G/North Colaba, Kalbadevi, Malabar Hill, Worli, Prabhadevi, Dadar, Mahim
Western Suburbs H/East, H/West, K/East, K/West, P/South, P/North, R/South, R/North, R/Central Bandra, Khar, Juhu, Vile Parle, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar
Eastern Suburbs N, L, S Ghatkopar, Kurla, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg

The civic body had originally planned this maintenance work for earlier in the month but postponed it to avoid inconvenience to the lakhs of followers gathering in Mumbai for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's Mahaparinirvan Diwas on December 6.

The BMC has appealed to the residents in the affected wards to store sufficient water in advance and use the resource judiciously throughout the 24-hour window to minimize hardship.
