A tragic incident in Ambarnath near Mumbai has rocked India and reignited domestic abuse and harassment in marriages after a 26-year-old woman died by suicide just 48 days after her wedding. Vishakha Tilkar was found dead at her matrimonial home, and her family claimed her husband and in-laws kept torturing her mentally and physically.

On April 30, Vishakha married Nitin Tilkar, a doctor. Before the marriage, they said, relations between the two families were cordial, and there were no visible signs of conflict in the family. But they say the situation changed after the wedding.

Family members have accused Vishakha's husband, mother-in-law, and other relatives of repeatedly complaining about the gifts, jewellery, and arrangements made during the marriage ceremony. They frequently compared what had been given during the wedding and demanded additional money and gold from Vishakha's parents, the allegations said.

Relatives say the constant discussion about gifts and financial expectations caused emotional distress to the young woman. They say she was repeatedly reminded about bringing more valuables from her parents’ home and was under great mental pressure.

It also alleges that Nitin Tilkar installed CCTV cameras both inside and outside the house and monitored Vishakha’s movements continuously. Her activities, conversations, and interactions were closely monitored, and little privacy and personal freedom were granted to her, said the family.

The accusations also claim that Vishakha was often questioned about whom she spoke to and where she went. Family members say even the normal exchanges with neighbours or friends would result in arguments and alleged physical abuse when she came home.

Vishakha was assaulted two days before her death after she talked to a neighbouring woman, relatives said. Family members said that repeated harassment, humiliation, and control contributed to her deteriorating mental state.

Vishakha had told her mother about her marital problems. She had described harassment, physical abuse, and emotional trauma during phone calls, the source said. Her parents had begun planning to return her home.

But before they could do so, they received the devastating news that Vishakha had allegedly died by suicide.

It has left her family shattered and has drawn the attention of residents and women’s rights advocates. A large number of cases of domestic abuse and mental harassment in marriages have been reported.

Due to a complaint by Vishakha’s family, the Shivajinagar Police Station in Ambarnath also filed a case against her husband Nitin Tilkar, mother Chhaya Tilkar, and brother Ninad Tilkar. The accused have been booked under charges of mental and physical harassment and abetment of suicide.

Police officials confirmed Nitin Tilkar has been arrested, while investigations are going on to trace and catch the other accused named in the case. Evidence is being considered from phone records, witness accounts, and other material related to the allegations.

The case has once again brought up the issue of domestic violence, emotional abuse, and dowry-related pressures despite all legal protections for women. And they have to keep up with the evidence, and there is no doubt that intervention, family support, and legal assistance to prevent such tragedies is key.

The authorities said a thorough investigation will be carried out to find out what happened to Vishakha's death and to ensure justice is served.
