What started as a spiritual family outing ended in unimaginable heartbreak when five people, including four of the same family members, drowned in the Cauvery River near Muthathi in Karnataka’s Mandya district on Tuesday evening.
The victims, including Vijayamma (50), Shwetha (38), Priyanka (28), Chaithra (20), and driver Mahesh, are residents of Byadarahalli in Channapatna taluk. They had traveled to the area to see temples and spend time together, but a moment near the river turned into a tragic tragedy that killed five people in minutes.
A Day of Devotion Ends in Disaster
According to the police, the family had visited the famous Kabbalamma Temple first, before they went to the Muthathiraya Temple in Muthathi, a popular pilgrimage and tourist destination along the banks of the Cauvery River.
After having received their darshan, the group moved to the riverbank and took pictures and came to the riverbank for a tour and took in the wonderful scene.
At 4:45 p.m., officials said, a few of the family members entered the water believing that it would be shallow and safe. But what appeared calm on the surface concealed strong underwater currents that are common in the Cauvery, especially in periods of increased water flow.
One Rescue Attempt Led to a Chain of Tragedy
Vijayamma was the first to lose her footing when she stepped into a deeper section of the river, police said. The others rushed into the water to save her as she struggled against the current.
What followed is a tragic chain reaction. One after another, family members entered the river attempting to save Vijayamma, but the current was too strong to save them. In a matter of seconds, all five victims were swept away.
The victims ignored warnings issued by Home Guards stationed near the river, as senior police officer Shobha Rani said.
"The family came for a temple visit. After darshan, they went near the river for photographs," she said. "Vijayamma was the first to get into difficulty, and the others tried to save her but were caught in the current."
Child Survives, Relative Rescued
In the midst of the tragedy, there was one small miracle. A four-year-old child who was with the family escaped unharmed and did not enter the river. Another family member, Ravi, who also rushed to save the victims, was pulled to safety by local residents and survived.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as bystanders desperately tried to alert the family about the dangers posed by the river's hidden currents.
Massive Rescue Operation
After receiving information about the incident, teams from the Fire and Emergency Services Department were soon on the way. Search and rescue teams, with help from local residents and police personnel, began a search operation that lasted into the evening.
All five bodies were finally recovered from the river and taken to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) Hospital for post-mortem examination. Halagur Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
Hidden Dangers of the Cauvery River
Muthathi is one of Karnataka’s most visited eco-tourism and pilgrimage places and draws thousands of visitors each year. The area is surrounded by dense forests and lush green areas and is located close to the Cauvery River. But officials have warned tourists repeatedly about the deceptive nature of the river.
Although some of the stretches may look shallow and calm, sudden depth changes, slippery rocks, whirlpools, and strong underwater currents can make the river extremely dangerous, especially in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.
Authorities often have Home Guards and install warning boards near dangerous areas of the river, but accidents happen when visitors underestimate the strength of the river.
A Community in Mourning
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Byadarahalli and the surrounding areas where the victims were known and respected members of the community. What was meant to be a day of prayer, family bonding, and spiritual fulfillment ended in tragedy. Even seemingly calm rivers can become deadly within seconds.
As this investigation continues, authorities are again urging tourists and pilgrims to strictly follow safety advisories, avoid entering unfamiliar waters, and never ignore warnings issued by rescue personnel.
For one family, the sacred temple journey has turned into a tragedy that will be remembered for years to come.
