A 38-year-old woman in Maharashtra’s Nagpur died after her husband assaulted her during a fight over her decision to go to a dance class instead of cooking food at home. Police have arrested the 41-year-old husband and filed a murder case based on the post-mortem examination.
The deceased woman has been identified as Yamini Krishna Lal Yadav, while her husband and the accused Krishna Lal Yadav have been arrested. The couple has two young children.
According to police, the incident occurred after Krishna Lal returned home from work and asked Yamini to help him and their children cook food. Yamini was at home preparing to go to a dance class organised in her housing society. She refused to cook because she wanted to go to the class, and there was a fight between the couple.
An Argument Goes Into Violence.
At that time, the dispute turned violent, police said. Krishna Lal was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he assaulted Yamini. The assault caused her neck and abdomen to be broken and occurred in front of their two children, police said.
After the alleged assault, Yamini reported severe pain in her neck and stomach. She asked her husband to get painkillers to help ease her condition.
Krishna Lal allegedly went to a medical store to purchase the medicine, but the shop was closed. He returned home without the medication.
Yamini's condition was even worse as her abdomen started swelling and there were fears of serious internal injuries. She was eventually taken to a hospital for medical treatment. She died during treatment, despite efforts to save her.
Post-Mortem Reveals Serious Injuries
The case initially took a different turn. Police had registered an accidental death case and sent Yamini's body for a post-mortem examination.
But the post-mortem examination apparently revealed injuries that raised serious questions about the circumstances of her death. The neck bone was broken and severe injuries to the intestines were reported, the report said.
The investigation was then conducted in the aftermath and Krishna Lal was questioned. Police filed a murder case against him and arrested him.
Victim's Family Raises Concerns
Yamini's brother said the family believed she died under tragic circumstances. But post-mortem findings indicated she had suffered injuries consistent with an assault.
The family had been informed of Yamini's death while they were in Mumbai. He said a post-mortem report revealed signs of strangulation as well as serious abdominal injuries.
The brother also said Yamini had already told him about her husband's arguments with her earlier. Family members had tried to get her to speak about the disputes or get him involved, but she asked them not to intervene as she feared that doing so could cause her problems at home.
The family, he said, considered the earlier disputes to be ordinary marital disputes and did not expect the situation to escalate into such a serious incident.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the post-mortem report, police questioned Krishna Lal and later arrested him. A murder case has been registered and investigators are still investigating the circumstances behind Yamini’s death.
As domestic violence is all-pervasive, it has brought into stark relief the terrible consequences of disputes in a household. In what began as a dispute between household duties and a dance class, it turned into a deadly assault, sources said.
The couple’s two children were present during the alleged assault, adding another disturbing aspect to the case.
Police now will assess evidence from medical examinations, post-mortem findings, family members, and other available evidence as part of the investigation. The case against the accused will be examined and court proceedings will be conducted.
It's a sad case that serves as a tragedy to see domestic disputes escalate very quickly when violence occurs in a household. Police are still investigating the full sequence of events in Yamini's death.
