A new Navasankalpa Bakery was inaugurated in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison as part of a programme to offer vocational training and rehabilitation to prisoners. The bakery was inaugurated by Director General of Police Alok Kumar along with the HCL Foundation.
The project aims to provide the intended prisoners with real-world skills in bakery-product preparation and give them a way to earn income after they finish.
In addition to the bakery, the authorities also launched Navasankalpa Bakery on Wheels, a mobile sales unit that sells bakery products directly to consumers at different locations across Bengaluru.
Bakery training for new convicts
One of the fundamental goals of the Navasankalpa Bakery project is vocational training for the newly sentenced prisoners. They will gain hands-on skills in preparing various bakery products and could subsequently be useful once they are released.
The programme is designed to make prison rehabilitation more practical through training and commercial production and sales.
The prisoners who complete the training will also receive certificates. This certification will help to formally certify the skills learned in their training, which can then help them to be able to get jobs or self-employment opportunities after they leave prison.
Navasankalpa Bakery on Wheels
It is also important to launch Bakery on Wheels. The programme details show the mobile units will sell bakery products at various places like court premises and bus stands in Bengaluru.
The model is designed to create a direct connection between production inside the prison and consumers outside. Rather than being limited to the prison premises, the mobile bakery concept allows for product sales to a wider population.
The programme also offers prisoners involved with the programme the chance to be exposed to the different aspects of the bakery business (production and product sales).
Rehabilitation and Self-Reliance
The Navasankalpa Bakery initiative is being described as an important one for prisoner rehabilitation. Vocational training can equip inmates with skills that can come in time to obtain legal employment or self-employment once released.
As prisoners have no job prospects after their sentences, the need for a certain trade is a key part of reconstruction. The bakery project is designed to provide that training and work experience to them in the field.
A role of responsibility and self-reliance in the programme is also promoted among the prisoners. In addition to learning how to bake bakery products and how to sell and distribute them, inmates have gained more than what is taught in a classroom.
Revenue generation for the government
In addition to rehabilitation, the initiative has an economic objective. The sale of bakery products is expected to help government revenue, creating a model in which prison-based vocational activities can have both social and financial outputs.
The collaboration with the HCL Foundation also brings in an external institutional partner to the rehabilitation programme. Such collaborations can support skill-development programs and provide vocational skills in correctional institutions.

A Step towards life after prison

A prisoner leaving the correctional system with a recognised skill may have more options for earning a livelihood and becoming financially independent. The bakery project thus represents an approach to rehabilitation which links training with practical economic activity.
With the launch of Navasankalpa Bakery and Bakery on Wheels, Parappana Agrahara Prison introduced a new vocational initiative to integrate skill development, rehabilitation, employment opportunities, and revenue generation.
The programme will be successful if it is ongoing, quality training is provided, and prisoners who have been trained can find a job after that. But it is an attempt to incorporate vocational rehabilitation as part of the correctional system.
