Patna has taken a step forward in supporting its growing gig economy with 24x7 AC rest pods for delivery agents working with Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit and others. The initiative, which was launched this week, seeks to make the work safe and comfortable for workers who spend long hours on the road in very difficult weather conditions.
The rest pods are strategically located around busy commercial hubs and bridges, particularly Kurji and Gandhi Maidan, where delivery traffic is especially heavy. Each pod is equipped with air conditioning, charging points, drinking water, and seating arrangements, which allows gig workers a much-needed break during their shifts.
The pods are designed to function round-the-clock; people can come in, and they don’t have to be away from work. As the food delivery and quick commerce services operate late into the night and on the weekends, the pods provide a safe place for rest, reducing fatigue and promoting better health for workers.
Gig workers (often with long hours, extreme heat and limited rest facilities) have praised the initiative. Many delivery workers said they were relieved to have a place to recharge both themselves and their devices. The pods are also a step toward acknowledging gig workers’ contributions to the city’s economy.
But some observers have raised concerns about maintenance and sustainability. Cleanliness, security, and regular maintenance will be vital to the success of such a project. Local municipal bodies will oversee the operations, and local councils have been assured that there are feedback mechanisms to address workers’ concerns.
Finally, the launch of AC rest pods in Patna marks a major milestone in the development of urban welfare. The city is also setting the bar for other cities in our country to take care of the gig workers. If done right, these pods could be a model for inclusive urban infrastructure in India with technology, comfort, and social responsibility to support India’s fast-growing gig market.
