Cyber fraudsters are sending fake SMS messages, WhatsApp texts, emails, and even calling to say that a customer's LPG connection will be blocked, suspended, or deactivated unless they complete an urgent verification process.

These fraudulent messages often look genuine, with company logos and official language and fake customer care numbers.

Scammers often ask customers to click on suspicious links, download unknown apps, or share sensitive information such as Aadhaar details, bank account numbers, OTPs, or debit card information.

Government agencies and oil marketing companies have repeatedly warned consumers that Bharat Gas, Indane, and HP Gas never ask customers to share OTPs, banking credentials, or personal details through unofficial messages or phone calls.

Any request for immediate payment or threatening disconnection should be treated with extreme caution.

The most frequent scam involves a message that the KYC has expired and that their LPG subsidy or gas connection will be cancelled if they don't update their details immediately.

The victims are directed to fake websites that look very much like LPG portals. Once someone enters personal information, the fraudster will use it for financial fraud and identity theft.

Another trick is to fake customer support calls where fraudsters act as LPG company representatives.

They convince customers to install remote access applications under the pretext of solving technical issues.

These apps give scammers full control of the victim’s smartphone and enable them to access banking apps, personal information, and digital wallets.

Consumers are advised to verify every communication through the official websites or customer care numbers of Bharat Gas, Indane, and HP Gas.

Do not click links sent through unsolicited SMS, WhatsApp messages, or emails. If a message creates panic by mentioning account suspension, subsidy cancellation, or urgent verification, it is likely to pressure customers into making mistakes.

Also, experts recommend checking website addresses carefully before entering any information.

Government or LPG company websites usually use secure domains, while fraudulent websites often have spelling mistakes or odd web addresses.

If you receive a suspicious message or call, don't respond or share any confidential information. Report the incident to the LPG distributor, the oil company, and the National Cyber Crime Portal.

If money has been transferred or banking information has been compromised, immediately contact your bank and call the Cyber Crime Helpline 1930.

As cyber scams become more sophisticated, awareness is the most effective defense.

Keep that in mind and verify information only through official channels, and tell family members especially senior citizens about such fraudulent tactics.

A little bit of precaution can prevent significant financial loss and protect personal information from cybercriminals.
