Narendra Modi will go to the cultural city of Mysuru on August 1 to inaugurate the newly constructed Swami Vivekananda Memorial and Cultural Youth Centre, a landmark project at an estimated cost of ₹45 crore. This will be one of the most significant events in the city’s major events of this year so far, as it should really help in keeping India’s cultural heritage alive and creating spaces that could be a touchstone for the younger generation of people to learn from and preserve India’s cultural heritage in future generations.
The memorial has been founded in the heart of Mysuru at Narayana Shastri Road in Devaraja Mohalla, which is a historical and spiritual site. According to historical records, Swami Vivekananda stayed there during one of his visits to Mysuru before embarking on his journey to the West, where he notably represented India at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.
Given the historical significance of the site, it has been renovated and transformed into a modern cultural and youth centre while keeping its heritage. A cultural centre (cultural activities and youth development programme) is to be developed in the new place. Swami Vivekananda's dreams and philosophies are still alive and well today, and he is still inspiring today’s youth who have learnt about self-confidence in society and nation-building.
Modi's visit will formally launch this ambitious project, which is expected to become a cultural landmark in Karnataka. We expect the inauguration ceremony will be attended by senior government officials, religious leaders, public representatives and citizens from the state.
After the inauguration, the Prime Minister will visit Ramakrishna Ashrama in Mysuru. He will pay floral tributes to the statue of Swami Vivekananda, one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders and philosophers. It is the government’s stance to nurture and develop India’s cultural and spiritual heritage, which is the basis for the visit.
Swami Vivekananda Memorial and Cultural Youth Centre will play an integral role in cultivating leadership skills, ethical behaviour and social responsibility among young people.
