Narendra Modi paid tribute to the freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad in the wake of the birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter on his birthday, and recalled him as one of India's bravest revolutionaries whose courage and patriotism are a source of inspiration for generations to come.
In a post on Twitter the prime minister acknowledged Azad’s immense contribution to India’s freedom struggle and highlighted the lasting impact of his sacrifice on the nation’s history.
"Paying homage to the brave Chandra Shekhar Azad on his birth anniversary. His fearless courage and unwavering patriotism occupy a proud place in the history of India's freedom struggle. He inspired so many young Indians to give everything for our nation. His resolve continues to inspire generations," PM Modi said in a letter.
It is the nation's thanks to Chandra Shekhar Azad who was one of the most famous revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement.
Azad was born on July 23, 1906, in Madhya Pradesh and joined the freedom movement at an early age. After being active in the Non-Cooperation Movement he joined revolutionary groups like Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and worked with such notables like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.
Azad received his famous title, "Free," by boldly declaring before a British magistrate that his name was Azad, his father’s name was “Swatantrata” (Freedom) and his address was “Jail.” The episode was one of his most defining moments in his revolutionary life and cemented his place in India’s history.
Azad remained insistent on independence throughout his life. He once promised to never be captured alive by British authorities. On February 27, 1931, in Allahabad’s Alfred Park (now Chandra Shekhar Azad Park), he fought bravely and shot himself in the head in a last line of defense so he wouldn’t have to surrender.
