Narendra Modi on Thursday announced development projects worth more than ₹18,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh, one of the largest state’s infrastructure and industrial investment programs.
The projects cover semiconductor manufacturing, airport expansion, road connectivity, industrial infrastructure and energy that is a testament to the government’s drive to make Andhra Pradesh a centre of manufacturing and logistics.
The announcements come at a time when India is accelerating investments in domestic electronics production and modern infrastructure via Make in India, Digital India and the India Semiconductor Mission.
Semiconductor Plant Takes Centre Stage
One of the major highlights of the investment package is the establishment of a semiconductor manufacturing facility. The project is expected to enhance India's semiconductor ecosystem by reducing reliance on imported chips while creating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The semiconductor industry has become strategically important as the demand for chips is growing in cars, smartphones, consumer electronics, artificial intelligence, defence, communication and technology industry.
The facility will help to attract suppliers, component manufacturers and technology firms and will have an industrial ecosystem that will benefit Andhra Pradesh for years to come.
Airport and Infrastructure Expansion
Apart from electronics manufacturing, the programme is also targeted at the development of airport infrastructure and transport links.
The better airport facilities are also expected to increase passenger traffic, cargo movement, tourism and business travel. Better logistics will also help exporters and industries in Andhra Pradesh.
The road and connectivity projects proposed in the package are planned to reduce travel time, improve freight movement and connect industrial clusters, ports and urban centres more efficiently.
Boost for Manufacturing and Employment
The investment of ₹18,000 crore will generate a lot of jobs in the construction and operation phase. Large-scale infrastructure projects will create jobs in engineering, construction, logistics, services, manufacturing and ancillary areas.
Experts believe that better infrastructure will also encourage private investment, and hence Andhra Pradesh will attract companies who are looking to expand manufacturing operations in India.
The state already has a long coastline, multiple ports, industrial corridors and better connectivity, and so it is very attractive to local and global investors.
Strengthening India's Semiconductor Vision
India has been promoting semiconductor manufacturing with financial and policy support. Establishing semiconductor facilities in various states is considered a key step to building a resilient domestic electronics supply chain.
