A tragic road accident on the Pollachi-Udumalpet National Highway in Tamil Nadu killed five people, including three women, when a speeding car rammed into a stationary water tanker near Nallampalli.
The water tanker had been deployed to water trees planted on the highway median, according to initial reports. The car was parked at the roadside where workers worked on maintenance. The speeding car failed to slow down, and crashed into the back of the tanker with huge force.
The car’s front part was mangled and its occupants were trapped in the car. Emergency workers and residents of the neighborhood rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts.
But all five of the people inside the car died of their injuries before they could be taken to a hospital.
The deceased were three women and two men, police confirmed. Their identities were verified and officials are working to inform their family members. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination at a government hospital.
There is preliminary evidence that overspeeding was the cause of the accident. But police are also exploring if visibility, driver fatigue or other factors were one of the reasons for the fatal crash. CCTV footage from nearby places and eyewitness testimony are being collected.
The accident caused some traffic congestion on the Pollachi-Udumalpet National Highway as police and rescue workers cleared the damaged vehicles from the road. Traffic was later restored after the initial investigation into the accident was completed.
