The political tension over student protests in Jharkhand took a new turn outside Parliament after BJP MP Ram Chandra Dalal reportedly questioned Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her absence from the state.
The exchange took place as Congress continued its criticism of the BJP over the recent protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Dalal was reportedly raising slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi outside Parliament when Priyanka Gandhi passed by.
Dalal said to her directly: “Why didn’t you go to Jharkhand?” in the face of repeated protests by students and job aspirants over alleged irregularities in the recruitment exams in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
Priyanka Gandhi responded that Rahul Gandhi had already met students involved in the protests.
The exchange comes at the same time as a political tension between the Jharkhand student movement and the state government. Job aspirants in Ranchi have been protesting over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and have demanded action from the state government.

Rahul Gandhi Condemns Police Action
Rahul Gandhi has voiced his bitter opposition to the use of force against protesting job aspirants in Jharkhand. He said peaceful protesters have the right to raise their concerns and condemned violence against students.
The protests intensified when police used water cannons, tear gas and lathicharge at job aspirants trying to march towards the Jharkhand Assembly.
Rahul Gandhi also advised Jharkhand's Hemant Soren-led government to engage directly with the protesting students and address their grievances. Congress is part of the ruling alliance in the state.
He said dialogue is required in order to address students and job seekers’ concerns rather than force.
BJP Targets Congress over ‘Double Standards’
The position of the Congress has also drawn criticism from BJP leaders. Jharkhand Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused the Congress leadership of adopting what they described as “double standards” over the protests.
BJP leaders have questioned why Congress is still criticising governments for taking sides in student protests while being part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand. They have asked the party to show its commitment to the students’ demands by reconsidering its support for the Hemant Soren government.
Thus the issue has become a political fight between BJP and Congress, in which they are trying to cast themselves as supporters of students and job aspirants.
Priyanka Gandhi Questions BJP Protest
Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the BJP’s protest strategy in the interaction outside Parliament. She said she had never seen MPs from a ruling party protest and suggested that the opposition pressure had contributed to the development.
She also called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to come forward and make a statement on the issue.
So the Jharkhand student protests have become more than an examination-related dispute, but have become a major political issue, with recruitment transparency, student rights and government accountability.
With BJP and Congress throwing accusations, the pressure on the Jharkhand government is mounting to address the concerns of protesting aspirants and give a clear picture on the examination errors.
