Russian President Vladimir Putin will have another bilateral meeting with PM Narendra Modi during his visit to India. The high-level meeting is scheduled for Friday September 11 and the broad range of issues affecting the long-standing strategic partnership between India and Russia would figure in it.
Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the President of the Russian Federation said Moscow was looking forward to the meeting between the two leaders. “President Putin and Prime Minister Modi will discuss the bilateral agenda, exchange views on key regional and international issues,” Peskov added.
“We are expecting President Putin and Prime Minister Modi to have another bilateral meeting during the visit. It is Friday, September 11,” Peskov said. “It will be an opportunity for both leaders to discuss issues related to India-Russia relations.”
The interaction is timely as India and Russia continue to have close diplomatic, economic and strategic ties. They have a long history of cooperation in defence, energy, trade, technology and security sectors. Modi-Putin meetings (regularly held) have helped maintain communication between New Delhi and Moscow in changing global geopolitical conditions.
One of the important things about the meeting will be that President Putin will inform Prime Minister Modi about developments in Ukraine, Peskov said. Russia-Ukraine conflict has been one of the most important geopolitical issues in recent years — it drew international attention and affected global energy markets, trade routes and diplomatic relations as well.
India has always said dialogue and diplomacy are the way to resolve conflicts and called for peaceful solutions to the Ukraine crisis. New Delhi has also been engaged with major global powers but has continued to stress diplomatic solutions as well.

Putin-Modi meeting is therefore expected to be a platform for direct exchange of views on the Ukraine situation as well as wider international developments. Peskov said President Putin would have an opportunity “to tell his Indian counterpart what Russia sees from its point of view and what the current situation is regarding the war”.
Other than global issues, bilateral agenda is likely to be an important part of discussion as well. India and Russia have been working on expanding economic cooperation and strengthening trade linkages. Energy cooperation (oil and other sectors) has also emerged as a major component of relationship.
Defence cooperation has always been a pillar of India-Russia relations but both countries have also looked for opportunities to expand cooperation in new areas (connectivity, technology, space and infrastructure).
The meeting on September 11 will be another chapter to Modi and Putin’s regular meetings. Leader-level interactions are seen as important to deepen mutual understanding and address issues that affect both countries.
As President Putin prepares to travel to India diplomatic attention will remain on what happens when he meets Prime Minister Modi. The talks will underline how much both countries value their bilateral partnership but also give them an opportunity to talk about major global issues — including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
