The Karnataka government’s Gruha Jyothi scheme is currently undergoing a statewide beneficiary verification exercise to update records and weed out ineligible or outdated registrations.
The door-to-door verification drive started on July 1, 2026, across the state’s electricity supply company jurisdictions. The government had initially fixed August 31 as the deadline but extended it by one month to September 30 so more beneficiaries could complete the process.
The exercise has led to several questions among consumers (documents required, procedure to be followed, and whether tenants can continue to receive the benefit).
Why Is Gruha Jyothi Verification Being Conducted?
The verification exercise is being carried out to ensure that the benefit reaches eligible domestic electricity consumers and beneficiary records are updated.
Officials found changes in tenancy, beneficiaries moving to another house, changes of ownership, and cases where commercial establishments were reportedly using residential electricity connections. The government ordered fresh verification of existing beneficiaries.
The verification is being done by Karnataka’s ESCOMs (BESCOM, MESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM and CESC).
How does the Gruha Jyothi re-verification process work?
Authorized ESCOM staff will visit registered beneficiary households for verification. Existing details of the beneficiary will be checked, and additional information may also be recorded through a mobile application.
Consumers must cooperate with officials and keep the documents ready.
If the beneficiary is not available when officials visit, consumers can contact their respective ESCOM office and ask them to complete the verification process.
In Bengaluru, BESCOM has also asked beneficiaries in locked or inaccessible houses to cooperate with repeated visits. Meter readers can visit locked houses repeatedly and record status on survey application reports said.
What Documents Are Required?
Beneficiaries should keep the following documents available during verification:
- Aadhaar card
- Voter ID/EPIC card
- Electricity bill or consumer/account details
- Passport-size photograph
- PAN card, where applicable
- Ration card
- Rental or tenancy agreement, if applicable
- Other supporting documents relevant to the beneficiary
Government verification instructions include collecting voter status, ration-card category, profession, and income-tax/PAN status.
What If You Do Not Have a PAN Card?
Consumers who do not have a PAN card or have not paid income tax should inform the verification staff accordingly.
The absence of a PAN card by itself should not be an automatic reason for cancellation. The status can be recorded during verification.
Are Tenants Eligible for Gruha Jyothi?
Yes. The scheme is not only for homeowners — tenants too can get the Gruha Jyothi benefit if they fall under its conditions.
Tenants should keep a copy of their rental or tenancy agreement (or other proof) showing occupancy and address; a Voter ID with that address might also be useful as supporting documentation.
Does Gruha Jyothi apply to commercial connections?
No. The benefit is for eligible domestic electricity connections only. Commercial establishments are not covered by the domestic Gruha Jyothi benefit.
That is why the government has undertaken this current verification exercise – so that cases may be found where benefit may have been availed through connections which do not meet scheme requirements.
What Happens If Verification Is Not Completed?
Beneficiaries should not ignore verification. If officials can’t verify a beneficiary or some information is incomplete, then consumers may have problems with continuation of the benefit.
However, beneficiaries who have not yet completed the process should use the extended window and work with their respective ESCOM staff rather than assuming that the scheme has been discontinued.
The September 30 deadline gives consumers more time to complete the verification.
When Is Gruha Jyothi Verification Date? What Is The Last Date For Verification Of Gruha Jyothi?
The revised deadline for the ongoing Gruha Jyothi beneficiary verification exercise is September 30, 2026.
The original deadline was August 31, 2026. It was extended another month because a lot of beneficiaries hadn’t verified yet.
As of August 31, verification was not completed in many ESCOM jurisdictions. BESCOM had reviewed about 46.7 lakh beneficiaries out of around 68.9 lakh in its jurisdiction so far (reported figures).
Will the Deadline Be Extended Again?
At the moment, the deadline has been extended only up to September 30, 2026. There is no information about any other extension yet.
Therefore, beneficiaries who have not completed verification should not wait for another extension and should complete the process within the current deadline.
