Tamil Nadu politics has witnessed a fresh clash within the Congress-Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) alliance over the question of leadership for the 2029 Lok Sabha election. The two parties have different leaders who have voiced different views on who will take the prime minister’s post, with Rahul Gandhi being backed by the Congress leaders and Vijay, the actor-turned-politician, among them, for a bigger national portfolio under the leadership of the TVK.
The conversation has received more attention because Congress and TVK are currently in the same political alliance in Tamil Nadu. The parties as such are working together in the state-level political arena, but the national leadership of each party has been divided on a national level, according to the leaders.
Congress leaders have reiterated their support for Rahul Gandhi as the party's preferred Prime Ministerial face. Some Tamil Nadu Congress leaders have publicly said Gandhi will be the party's choice for the 2029 Lok Sabha election and have indicated that alliance partners should consider supporting him if the opposition grouping decides to put forward a common candidate.
Meanwhile, voices in TVK have been advocating Vijay as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate for 2029. People of Tamil Nadu have said that his political popularity and growing organisation could give Tamil Nadu a significant role in national politics, and so to the actor-turned-politician that his political popularity and growing party support could make him a leader of the people of Tamil Nadu even greater. However, comments that TVK leaders and supporters make are not necessarily a formal announcement by the entire alliance.
The rift has been more noticeable now when leaders within both camps have spoken on it. Some members of Congress have warned that their participation in the alliance could come under pressure if TVK does not support Rahul Gandhi for the prime minister post.
Congress leaders have also played down suggestions that the dispute could potentially lead to the collapse of the alliance. Some have stressed that differences over a future Prime Ministerial candidate do not automatically mean that the parties will end their cooperation in Tamil Nadu.
Another key aspect of the debate is the distinction between a party's preferred leader and an officially agreed alliance candidate. Political parties can promote their own leaders, but a Prime Ministerial candidate for a coalition ultimately depends on the numbers and support available in Parliament after an election. So, statements made several years before the 2029 Lok Sabha election should not be considered as a final decision on who will lead a future government.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has also highlighted the parliamentary aspect of the issue and said that the Prime Minister would eventually need majority support in the Lok Sabha. His comments highlight the difference between party preferences and the formation of a government in the aftermath of a general election.
The issue has also been discussed in Tamil Nadu by the Congress. Former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Selvaperunthagai has argued that alliance partners should accept Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial face. Congress MP Praveen Chakravarthy has sought to dispel speculation that the alliance is on the verge of breaking apart, saying that the partnership remains intact.
For TVK, Vijay's emergence as a powerful political figure has brought a new dimension to the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. Vijay, who has become one of Tamil cinema’s most popular actors, has entered electoral politics through TVK, and the party has become a key political force in the state after years of being a big player in Tamil cinema. His supporters have started to discuss what kind of political space is available to him beyond Tamil Nadu and his party.
But the 2029 Lok Sabha election is still several years away. Political alliances and leadership can change substantially before an election. At present, the Rahul Gandhi-versus-Vijay debate is about competing positions of alliance leaders and their supporters rather than a formal Prime Ministerial fight.
The developments show a fundamental challenge for the Congress-TVK partnership: maintaining cooperation at the state level but in terms of national leadership expectations. Whether the differences are limited to individual statements or become a larger issue for the alliance will depend on how the two parties approach leadership, seat-sharing and their broader political strategy as the next general election approaches.
