Delhi had a weak rain and strong winds as it went on Monday. A much needed relief from the heat and disruption to the city came with it.
According to India Meteorological Department, the showers were triggered by a western disturbance interacting with moisture‑laden winds. Such a system led to intense rainfall in Connaught Place, Dwarka, Rohini and South Delhi, and gusty winds swept through the NCR region (Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad).
The residents reported waterlogging in low‑lying areas, traffic snarls on major roads, and delays in public transport. A few trees were blown down by strong wind as well as blockages in residential colonies, causing some of them to get stuck in residential colonies for the first time. Power supply was also interrupted in parts of East Delhi and South Delhi.
Despite the inconvenience, the rain was welcomed by many, as temperatures dropped significantly. The average temperature had been around 42°C for the weekend, but dropped to around 35°C after the rain and the maximum temperature dropped to nearly 35°C after the showers. The IMD is expecting more rain and thunderstorms over the next 48 hours and wind will be 40–50 kmph in some areas.
The sudden weather change presented challenges for commuters to cope with the weather change. There were long queues of cars on busy roads, with traffic volumes on arterial roads such as Ring Road and Outer Ring Road and flights at IGI Airport had a small delay at the airport. Residents were advised, they said, to walk along the roads, keep out of the waterlogged areas and secure outdoor objects from strong winds.
The rainfall also signals the commencement of pre‑monsoon activity in North India. Meteorologists expect the Southwest Monsoon to move in on Delhi by the end of June and give more consistent showers. When the rain and strong winds disrupted daily life in Delhi, but also served to cushion us from the heat and set the tone for the heat and started the onset of seasonal weather changes.
Residents should be prepared for more rain in the days to come and weather in the days to come with more showers to come and be able to deal with the heat in the coming weeks, and we all need to do rain and strong winds and the weather will be more widespread, the rain and strong winds and rain, too, give rise to the weather will have the effect of the weather for a change in Delhi; they too would be there in the next week and they will be there for relief and problems.
