On August 10, around 500 saints, mahants and religious leaders are expected to march on to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi, demanding an impartial and high-level investigation into irregularities and alleged misappropriation of donations of the Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The rally is also very important politically and legally since the Supreme Court will hear a plea for CBI to investigate the allegations.
According to the organizers, the saints will begin their march at 11 am from near the Nepal Embassy in Mandi House area. They are going to go to the Prime Minister's residence and peacefully submit a memorandum seeking action over the allegations. Computer Baba and Prakashanand Giri Maharaj will manage the march.
The organisers have said that the memorandum will call for a fair investigation into allegations of the handling of donations made for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. They are going to demand strict legal action against anyone who is found guilty following a thorough investigation. The organizers have said that the demonstration is to bring in transparency and accountability in taking care of offerings made by devotees.
The money donation controversy has emerged in recent weeks following allegations of financial fraud and theft of cash and other valuables from donations in the temple. An SIT investigation is already in place. But the organisers of the march say further and independent investigation is required to discover all the facts and know if anyone was in a position of influence.
The timing of Monday’s march is especially significant because the Supreme Court has to hear a plea for a CBI investigation into the alleged embezzlement of Ram Temple donation funds. The legal process could decide the next step towards the demand for a central agency investigation.
The matter has also entered the political arena. Congress MP KC Venugopal recently asked for a discussion in the Lok Sabha about the serious allegations of the alleged embezzlement of donations from the Ayodhya temple. He moved an adjournment motion notice and asked for an independent, high-level inquiry under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge.
Venugopal claimed that an organised racket was going on in Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and donated cash and gold jewellery may have been misappropriated. He also criticised the SIT investigation which he claimed may be restricted to lower-level outsourced staff and not investigate people who may have played a bigger role. These are allegations by the Congress leader and are under investigation and legal scrutiny.
The demand for an independent inquiry has thus emerged as a central issue in the bigger controversy. Ram temple donations are from devotees all over the country, and any allegations of mismanagement must be investigated, they say.
At the same time, the issue is politically very sensitive due to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya’s religious and public significance. The Supreme Court had advised litigants not to politicise the matter and that the legal matter must remain focused on the matters before the court.
We expect this saints’ march to bring attention to the allegations and call for an independent investigation. While the organisers have described the demonstration as peaceful, the move to the residence of the Prime Minister might include security and crowd-management issues for Delhi authorities.
The Supreme Court hearing and the planned march have brought the Ram Temple donation controversy back into the spotlight. The allegations are in the public domain and are subject to investigation and judicial decision making. Financial wrongdoing and/or responsibility or criminal liability will ultimately be decided by the investigating agencies and by the courts.
When the Supreme Court decides on the CBI case, the saints’ memorandum will strengthen their claim to investigate the accusations fairly and hold those responsible accountable if they have to go to court. So the developments on August 10 could be a watershed moment in the ongoing debate about transparency, accountability and the handling of donations related to Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
