Bollywood star Ranveer Singh has landed in legal trouble after a complaint was filed against him at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. The complaint stems from alleged derogatory and offensive remarks made by the actor concerning a local deity (Daiva) during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28.
The Incident: Mistaking 'Daiva' for 'Devil' or 'Ghost'
The controversy arose while Ranveer Singh was on stage, reportedly praising the success of the Kannada film Kantara and its director, Rishab Shetty. In his attempt to laud the film's cultural core, the actor allegedly made an inappropriate reaction and referred to the Ullalthi Daiva—a revered local spirit/deity from the coastal Karnataka region—as a "Female Ghost".
The complaint specifically highlights that the actor seemingly mistook the highly revered "Daiva" (a divine spirit or deity) for "Devva" or "Ghost," and subsequently mocked or mimicked the deity on stage.
Complaint Filed: Hurting Religious Sentiments
The usage of the term "Female Ghost" to refer to a figure of deep religious and cultural significance has deeply offended the sentiments of the local community, especially those who follow the tradition of Daiva Aradhane (spirit worship).
Following the widespread disapproval of his comments, a formal complaint was lodged against the actor by advocate Prashanth Methal at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru, alleging that the actor's comments have hurt religious feelings and beliefs. The complaint calls for necessary action to be taken against Ranveer Singh for his remarks made on a public platform.
The Bengaluru Police have registered the complaint and are expected to review the evidence (likely video footage of the IFFI event) before proceeding with any legal action.
