A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu as the senior AIADMK leader and former minister R.B. Udhayakumar hit out at Chief Minister Vijay and popular actress Trisha at a public speech that has reignited speculation on the relationship of the actor and politician with their co-star.
Udhayakumar said he has been taking a sarcastic swipe at the Chief Minister, as they all know that there have been rumours about Vijay and Trisha for years. AIADMK leader Udhayakumar said no one, not even Trisha, is allowed to meet Vijay at midnight and celebrate special occasions such as cake cutting with him. Continuing his criticism, he said if Trisha becomes the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the near future, it will not come as a surprise to anyone.
The statement quickly became the talk of Tamil Nadu. Videos of the speech were posted from the parliament floor, and people who supported Vijay accused him of targeting the people's media by talking about the issue because they are not interested in the problem and instead wanted to focus on the political issue. And the comments have once again sent speculation on Vijay and Trisha to the front page, while neither side has come out with the allegations.
Udhayakumar also criticised the state government's handling of Vijay's much-awaited film Jana Nayagan for releasing it in the state. According to the former minister, when the movie was released in the state, there was an unofficial holiday atmosphere. The whole administrative apparatus, including ministers, legislators and government officials, in his opinion, paid more attention to watching the film than governance and public service in the state, he said.
The criticism comes at a time when Vijay's move from a movie star to a politician is one of the most closely watched developments in Tamil Nadu politics. Vijay has attracted a lot of attention from the public since the day he got into politics and eventually became Chief Minister. His every move (political or personal) is being closely watched by his fans, critics and media.
The speculation about Vijay and Trisha’s relationship has continued to grow for years as a result of their successful on-screen partnership and public encounters. But the speculation was revived after Vijay’s wife Sangeetha came to court with a divorce request. Media reports and social media talk about an extramarital relationship were the official story that had been going on between the two, but no official proof has been given by those involved.
Vijay and Trisha are one of Tamil cinema's most celebrated screen pairings. From the blockbuster Ghilli in 2004 to recent films like Leo, they have done some of the most popular films and are still considered the best. With their chemistry on screen, they have fuelled speculation off screen and are frequent subjects of speculation on their personal lives.
With Udhayakumar's comments, the issue has once again moved from entertainment gossip to political discourse. Personal attacks and celebrity relationships are quite common in Tamil Nadu’s competitive political environment. But such comments also raise the risk of turning public discourse away from governance and policy issues.

As the drama continues to gain headlines, neither Vijay nor Trisha has publicly responded to the former minister's comments. But the debate has already reignited the discussion on television channels, social media, and political forums, and it will be at the centre of the discourse in Tamil Nadu for quite a while.
