Retired ISRO Staffer Strangles Wife in Bengaluru Out of "Fear for Her Future"

A disturbing story about a domestic tragedy has surfaced from the peaceful inner areas of Bengaluru after an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) employee, who had retired, murdered his wife in his high-rise home. The incident occurred at the Virtuoso Apartment in the Avalahalli region, sending shockwaves through the region’s retired professionals and local residents. Nagaleswara Rao was arrested Wednesday, when his wife, Sandhya, was discovered dead in their home. Initial investigations have found that Sandhya was strangled to death.

The Chilling Motive: Intense anxiety and isolation

What is particularly chilling about this case is the motive that Rao himself admitted as he was being interviewed by the police. Instead of claiming that what he did stemmed from an argument or a financial dispute, Rao said his behavior stemmed from a warped concern for his wife’s well-being. Rao is said to be having severe anxiety over what would happen to Sandhya if he was to die first, he told the Avalahalli Police.

"I was thinking, who is going to be looking after her after me? We have no relatives near who would take care of her. I couldn't stand the thought of her suffering alone after my life ended so I decided to kill her," Rao apparently said during questioning. The police observed that the accused seemed in a brittle state of mind, acting as if he were someone who was suffering from extreme depression or a mental health crisis.

A family divided by distance

The couple had been living a relatively solitary life in Bengaluru. It turns out their only daughter lives in the United States. With their child thousands of miles away and no immediate support in the city, Rao’s mental state reportedly deteriorated into a morbid obsession with their solitude.

The couple was quiet and unassuming, according to neighbors at the Virtuoso Apartment, noting no evidence of domestic violence or the public airing of disputes in the past. Learning of the crime shocked and shook up the apartment association, an alarm that seemed to grow, as well, about the "loneliness epidemic" of senior citizens whose children have migrated abroad.

Legal Process and Mental Health Assessment

Avalahalli Police has filed a murder case under the respective sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The hard evidence connects to Rao, but, according to prosecutors, the doctors are now assessing his medical history to see if he was getting treatment for psychiatric illnesses. "We have taken the accused into custody.

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the most precise cause and time of death," said one of the senior investigating officers. "While the accused claims he was acting out of 'mercy' or anxiety-driven, it is a brutal violence, a cold-blooded act. We are also in the process of reaching out to their daughter in the US."

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the need for better community support systems for the elderly, especially in urban hubs where traditional family structures have become increasingly fragmented.
