India is rapidly growing in the global chip industry through the latest major investments aimed at creating a chip manufacturing ecosystem. Under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), the central government has approved several landmark projects and made them available to local and international companies to create fabrication units, Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facilities, and semiconductor-related manufacturing in India. States like Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh are the key regions in the semiconductor growth story in India, which have been able to contribute to our nation's ultimate goal to become a global electronics manufacturing center.

Gujarat has established itself as India’s leading semiconductor destination by securing some of the country’s largest chip manufacturing projects. Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Tata Electronics’ semiconductor ATMP plant in Sanand, Micron Technology’s semiconductor assembly and testing facility, and the CG Power–Renesas OSAT project are among the key investments that are going to be made in Gujarat. Gujarat’s industrial infrastructure, policy support, and dedicated semiconductor ecosystem have put it on the leading edge of India’s chip manufacturing landscape.

Assam has become an important part of India’s semiconductor journey through Tata Electronics’ semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad. It is one of the largest technology investments in Northeast India and is expected to change the industrial landscape. Besides creating jobs, the investment will also help in the development of supporting industries, and we are going to be a part of the global electronics supply chain.

Uttar Pradesh is also on India’s semiconductor map with projects under construction in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region. With a growing electronics manufacturing industry as well as good connectivity with technology and the expanding industrial infrastructure, the state is now in a position to become a major center for semiconductor packaging and electronics manufacturing. Several smartphone and electronics manufacturing facilities are located in Uttar Pradesh, so semiconductor investments are a natural extension of the industrial growth plan.

Odisha is already making significant contributions to the electronics industry through its policy-oriented policies, better industrial facilities, and electronics-oriented industry. This is a goal of the state as a whole to develop semiconductor and advanced electronics ecosystems as part of the long-term industrial vision. Odisha has access to ports and natural resources and is also good at logistics, and that is a good thing for the future semiconductor manufacturing and allied industries.

Punjab has also entered India's semiconductor sector by investing in electronics, semiconductor design, and advanced manufacturing. The state is working to leverage its strong engineering talent, industrial base, and educational institutions to attract semiconductor companies. While Punjab's semiconductor ecosystem is still in the early stages compared to many other states, government initiatives to promote high-technology manufacturing are expected to strengthen its competitiveness in the coming years.

Andhra Pradesh is another important player in India's semiconductor ambitions. The state has announced policies on electronics manufacturing, semiconductor investments, and industrial infrastructure. With its coastline, industrial corridors, skilled workforce, and logistics network, Andhra Pradesh is well placed to be an attractive site for semiconductor packaging, component production, and future chip investments. Andhra Pradesh is also located on the east coast of India and is very attractive to export-oriented manufacturing.

The expansion of semiconductor investment in many states is part of India’s overall strategy to develop a geographically diverse semiconductor ecosystem. Rather than keeping all manufacturing in a single region, the country is urging different states to develop particular strengths in fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging, design, research, and supporting industries.

Semiconductors are key components of virtually all modern technology: smartphones, laptops, cars, artificial intelligence systems, data centers, telecommunications equipment, healthcare devices, industrial automation tools, consumer electronics, and defense applications. With continued global demand for chips, countries are investing heavily in domestic semiconductor manufacturing to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce reliance on imports.

India's semiconductor push will generate high-value employment opportunities, attract foreign direct investment, encourage technology transfer, and enhance domestic manufacturing. The growth in semiconductor facilities will help in ancillary industries such as specialty chemicals, precision engineering, machinery, logistics, clean room infrastructure, automation systems, and advanced materials.

With continued government support from the India Semiconductor Mission, growing participation of global technology companies, and strategic industrial policies taken by the states, India’s semiconductor ecosystem is gradually taking shape. Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh are essential pieces of this national strategy and have the potential to play an important role in the semiconductor industry in the future to make the country a global center for semiconductor manufacturing and advanced electronics production.
