Tensions in Kerala’s election campaign boiled over after the convoy of Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor was chased and violently attacked on Saturday. Tharoor’s security detail was hurt in the attack and five people were arrested immediately.
The convoy was attacked by people riding motorcycles, eyewitness accounts and police reports show. The attackers chased the vehicles for several kilometers before blocking the path and pelting stones at the MP’s car. Shashi Tharoor escaped unharmed but his security gunman was injured as he tried to protect the vehicle from the attackers and fight them. The injured personnel were taken to a nearby hospital and are now in stable condition.
Swift Police Action
Kerala Police did what they had to do soon after the distress call and cordoned off the area and began a manhunt. By late Saturday night five suspects were in custody. Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may be politically motivated and is aimed at disrupting the high-profile campaign ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

"This is a blatant attempt to silence democratic voices through thuggery," said the local Congress spokesperson. “We expect the state government to ensure the safety of all representatives regardless of party lines."
Escalating Political Violence
The incident is the latest in a long line of confrontations in the state as election fever in 2026 gets underway. Manhandling and minor skirmishes on roadshows just a couple of days before had already put local law enforcement on high alert. Now, security for some of the state’s key political figures has been beefed up in sensitive spots.
Shashi Tharoor, who is particularly active in constituent engagement, went on his regular schedule later that night, accompanied by a heavy police escort. The Congress party has called for a state-wide condemnation of the act and a fair and rigorous investigation has been promised by the LDF government.
Election Watch: Security Updates
- Increased Surveillance: Special police units have been sent to monitor campaign rallies.
- Route Clearance: Candidates are now required to give detailed route maps 24 hours in advance for security sanitization.
- The five suspects are being questioned to determine if there is a bigger conspiracy behind the chase.
Do you think these increasing instances of campaign-related friction will lead to a change in how candidates interact with crowds in the final weeks?
