Shivamogga: A 27-year-old woman who was being treated in Manipal Hospital after an alleged case of medical negligence at Jayachamarajendra Government Hospital in Thirthahalli has died, further igniting public anger and demands for accountability.
The deceased was Suma (27). The family said that her death occurred during a surgical operation at the government hospital, in which doctors could not perform the procedure, and they blamed the medical personnel of the government hospital for their negligence. After her condition deteriorated, Suma was transferred to Manipal Hospital for further treatment.
Despite constant medical treatment by specialist doctors, they were unable to save her life. She died on Saturday evening; it was a tragedy that ended the family’s fight for justice and treatment.
Injured patient claims for failure during surgery
The controversy started after Suma's condition worsened after an operation at the Jayachamarajendra Government Hospital in Thirthahalli. Medical care of her has been blamed for the surgical complications, and her family has accused doctors of not doing their best.
The newborn baby, who is now in critical condition and is being treated at Shivamogga's McGann Hospital, was also affected. Doctors are constantly monitoring the child's health.
Family Protested Outside Hospital
Suma’s relatives protested outside the government hospital on Wednesday against the delay in which they say Suma had been treated in the hospital, and have been demanding an inquiry into the negligence and action against those responsible.
The protest drew the attention of local authorities and political leaders, with the family demanding justice be delivered and accountability fixed if negligence is established.
MLA Araga Jnanendra Assured Support
During the protest, MLA Araga Jnanendra met the grieving family and assured them of all possible assistance. He promised that the expenses for Suma's treatment at Manipal Hospital would be taken care of (and would be paid for through financial support in case of medical emergency).
But despite the efforts and advanced treatment, Suma could not be saved.
Investigation Expected
The woman's death is likely to be the cause of even more calls for a closer look at the surgery and the medical negligence allegations of physicians.
Health Department officials will review the case, look at medical records, and assess whether treatment protocols were followed. Any further action will be based on what the investigation shows.
The incident has once again raised concerns about patient safety and the quality of healthcare services in government hospitals, with many demanding stricter oversight and accountability to prevent similar tragedies.
Note: The allegations of medical negligence are based on the complaint made by the deceased’s family. Any official inquiry is awaited.
