The two senior Congress leaders will meet with the party’s central leadership to discuss the selection of district Congress presidents. The organisational exercise has already begun in Karnataka and party-appointed observers are involved in identifying and recommending suitable candidates.

The Delhi visit comes at a crucial stage of the organisational restructuring as the selection process for a group of around 35 district Congress presidents is now in its final phase.

District president selection is an important stage

The selection process has been carried out by individual observers assigned to different districts of the Congress. The observers have been interacting with the local party leaders and workers and evaluating some potential candidates to present them with recommendations.

At the grassroots level, the party is trying to strengthen the grassroots organisation, and district units need to have effective leadership for the next election cycle.

The final appointment of district presidents will be a key organisational decision, with district-level Congress units playing a central role in the coordination and management of party programmes, workers’ mobilisation and the communication between the state leadership and the grassroots cadre.

The selection process also comes at a time when the Karnataka Congress is focusing on organisational consolidation. The party high command has played a key role in major decisions about the Karnataka unit. Last week, senior Karnataka Congress leaders such as Siddaramaiah and Hariprasad had visited Delhi to consult with the central leadership about the most important state-specific issues.

Discussions with Congress high command

When they visit Delhi, Siddaramaiah and Hariprasad are expected to discuss the recommendations coming from the district-level selection exercise.

The final decision on district presidents might involve consultation over the suitability of candidates, the representation of different sections and the need to maintain organisational balance across the state.

The appointment of district-level leaders is particularly important because they are the bridge between the state party leadership and local Congress workers. District presidents are responsible for coordinating party activities, strengthening booth-level networks and implementing programmes and campaigns directed by the state and central leadership.

Based on this, the Congress will have to carefully consider the recommendations before making the appointments.

Leaders to attend Congress Working Committee meeting

Apart from the discussions on district president appointments, Siddaramaiah and Hariprasad are also expected to attend the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting to be held in Delhi tomorrow.

The CWC is the Congress party’s highest decision-making body, and its meetings provide a mechanism for senior leaders to discuss organisational, political and national issues.

The presence of senior Karnataka leaders will be of additional significance to the Delhi visit, and the state unit will likely have to discuss organisational issues and party priorities.

We are going to work on strengthening the Karnataka Congress.

The district president selection is going to bring new momentum to the Karnataka Congress organisation.

As the observers' exercise has ended, the focus turns towards final consultations and appointments. Once district presidents are appointed, the new leadership teams will be expected to help in the development of the party in their respective districts.

For the Congress, an effective district-level organisation will be essential for coordination among party workers, legislators, local leaders and the state leadership.

The Delhi talks between Siddaramaiah and B.K. Hariprasad are thus likely to be closely watched in Karnataka’s political circles. A final list of district presidents could be an indication of the party’s organisational priorities and the leadership structure which it intends to build at the grassroots level.

Further decisions will be made after the Delhi consultations and discussions with the Congress high command.
