In New York and San Jose, Indian diaspora members rallied around the renowned education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk to call out on the government to be transparent, accountable and defend people’s rights.

The protests were organized by members of the Indian community living in the United States and came amid growing debate over recent demonstrations involving students and activists in India. Protesters said their goal was to highlight concerns over democratic freedoms and encourage peaceful dialogue.
One of the central slogans in the rallies was, “Youth of India needs honest answers” to suggest that young people are entitled to greater transparency from authorities about issues related to education, governance and civil liberties.
Participants stressed that the demonstrations were peaceful and were not to promote political division but to help promote democratic values. Many of them held posters featuring Sonam Wangchuk’s image and others held Indian flags and banners calling for justice, accountability and protection of constitutional rights.
The gathering attracted students, professionals, environmental activists, and members of the Indian diaspora who think Wangchuk’s campaigns have inspired young people across the country to speak out on the issue. In addition, some of the speakers mentioned his long-standing efforts in sustainable development, education reform and environmental conservation in Ladakh.
The demonstrations were to bring global attention to the ongoing issues raised by Indian activists, they said. But, to them, peaceful protests are an integral part of any democracy and they pleaded with the government not to suppress dissent.
Social media sites were bombarded with videos and pictures of demonstrators in New York and San Jose, who marched with banners and chanted slogans. Many supporters and critics were quick to react, but also in other online communities, with Sonam Wangchuk trending in hashtags.
The protests are taking place at a time when debates over youth participation, democratic rights and public accountability in India are growing. They believe the voices of students and young citizens need to be heard (and that the students and young people in India are not just speaking up so that they can be listened to).
Sonam Wangchuk has become one of India’s most recognizable public figures through his work in innovative education, climate awareness, and sustainable development. His advocacy has struck a chord with students and young professionals who see him as a symbol of environmental responsibility and civic engagement.
The rallies in New York and San Jose are a manifestation of the growing participation of the global Indian diaspora in the discussion around governance, democratic participation and the future dreams of India’s youth as India and the rest of the world continue to talk about it.
