Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu met Tobacco Board officials about this situation and stressed the necessity of fast procurement of tobacco from FCV tobacco-growing areas in the state. Many farmers depend on tobacco to get their incomes and delay in procurement will have a negative impact on income and crop planning.

Focus on Farmers' Welfare

The minister said farmers have invested a lot in cultivation costs, including seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, and labor. With the harvest ready to sell, delays in procurement can lead to growers keeping stocks for longer periods of time, increasing storage costs and lowering product quality.

He asked the Tobacco Board to make sure auction platforms work well and that procurement is not delayed. Faster procurement would allow farmers to pay down debts and prepare for the next agricultural season.

Need for Efficient Auction Operations

FCV tobacco is primarily sold through Tobacco Board auction platforms, where buyers bid for tobacco lots based on quality. Atchannaidu asked officials to streamline the auction process, increase the pace of purchases, and resolve any operational bottlenecks that could slow procurement.

He also called for tight coordination between the state government, Tobacco Board officials, traders, and farmers to smooth the procurement process. He said taking action soon would build tobacco growers’ confidence and market efficiency.

Importance of FCV Tobacco in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is one of the leading FCV tobacco producers in India, with thousands of farmers cultivating the crop in districts such as Prakasam, Bapatla, Palnadu, and parts of East and West Godavari. The crop plays an important role in the state’s agricultural economy and contributes significantly to tobacco exports.

Consequently, procurement delays can have a huge economic impact on farmers because so many farmers depend on tobacco farming. Market stability in the industry is dependent on timely sales and fast payments.

Government's Continued Support

The state government officials said they would watch procurement and work with the Tobacco Board to resolve any concerns for growers.

Farmers welcomed the minister’s interventions and said they hope procurement will now move at a faster pace.

If implemented effectively, the measures would help to bring about a more sustainable and healthy industry and will provide financial relief to FCV tobacco growers in Andhra Pradesh.
