The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Union Minister C.R. Paatil, senior bureaucrats, district officials and municipal authorities. Harsh Sanghavi said the review looked at the situation that emerged from the torrential rains and the government’s response.

The review comes after days of relentless rainfall flooded many areas of Surat and inundated much of Surat with floodwater, affecting residential colonies, markets, roads and industrial areas. There is rainfall easing up in parts of Surat but floodwater has been held up in many places, and transportation, business and everyday life is still difficult in most places.

At least 13 people have died in rain-related incidents around Surat and thousands of residents are at risk of flood damage according to Surat with thousands of residents in flooded areas of the city. The city is still a sea of water and emergency teams are still working to rescue people and assist families.

Flooding affected homes, businesses, industrial campuses and public infrastructure in numerous parts of the city. Streets were damaged or closed, but stagnant water was found to be damaging to roads and drinking water, raising concerns over sanitation and the spread of waterborne diseases.

The Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel asked officials to speed up drainage works, help families affected by flooding, and improve coordination among the Surat Municipal Corporation, district administration, police and disaster response agencies. Long-term measures are needed to prevent recurrent flooding in the most vulnerable areas.

In another move, the state government announced a ₹500 crore package aimed at improving Surat’s creek and drainage system. This includes deepening waterways, removing encroachments blocking the flow of natural water, and upgrading flood-management facilities, the Chief Minister said.

The review was undertaken in the context of residents who were increasingly upset over repeated flooding in parts of Surat despite the fact that the infrastructure there had been built in the past. There will be an investigation in progress to identify roads damaged during the rains but local contractors or civic officials will be held responsible, the government said.

The heavy rainfall in southern Gujarat has led state and central governments to closely monitor the situation in the area. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and assured the Centre of full support in relief and rescue efforts.

Local authorities are on high alert and continue to rebuild areas hit by floods. Water is still receding from many of the flood-hit areas and restoration work is still ongoing in many of the flood regions and the government is on high alert to help their people, restore essential services and implement flood mitigation measures to protect against future extreme weather events.
