A shocking video has caused a stir in Surat railway station after a rat seems to eat a puff from a food stall.
The incident occurred at a tea stall on Platform 1 of Surat Railway Station in the early hours of August 29.
In the short video, a rat can be seen moving around the glass display area of the stall as well as eating an object from the food items before nibbling on a puff kept for customers.
The footage is causing consternation amongst passengers and social media users, and many question how a rodent could enter a food display area at a busy railway station.
Since railway food outlets serve thousands of passengers, cleanliness, pest control and food safety have been brought to the fore.
Railway Authorities Take Action
Following the video being circulated, Western Railway officials moved quickly against the affected food stall. The outlet was closed and sealed, and cleaning and sanitation measures were ordered.
It also initiated action against the contractor who operated the stall. More action could be taken against the contractor's licence if the authorities find out for sure.
The incident has attracted particular attention because efforts had recently been taken to clean up food stalls at Surat and Udhna railway stations. Pest and rodent-control measures had also been taken at the station earlier in August, it said.
Even with all of these precautions, however, the viral footage has raised questions about whether pest control and inspections are working.
