Supporters posted pictures and videos of the new setup — security vehicles were seen in parallel lanes while Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses and normal commutes continued uninterrupted, the police directing traffic. The move was made just days after Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10 after a victory for his party in the elections.

Although there has been no official statement from his office, such images have captured the imagination of the many who have long suffered from VIP convoys that cause them late arrivals. The Madras High Court has spent time watching the Madras High Court blasting such convoys' interruptions as something that causes public nuisance going back to 2018.

The court urged authorities to minimize inconvenience to ordinary commuters as much as possible - though what they did was in many cases a hit-and-miss campaign. Vijay’s convoy arrangement is being hailed by many as a move toward unraveling India’s deep-seated VIP culture, in which political leaders frequently enjoy preferential passage at the expense of the populace. Other observers observed that efforts were attempted under prior rulers, including M.K.

Stalin, but those were not consistently enforced. Meanwhile Vijay’s followers have cheered this as a symbolic break from tradition, this image fits his campaign as a reformist leader who is trying to make things easy to access. The public response is overwhelmingly encouraging--hats on the back of this.

Supporters among fans to the chief minister for his examples of modesty and pragmatism. The action has become unprecedented in Tamil Nadu’s history with messages rumbling across social media platforms, and one result has been that it represents what they say is a "new chapter" of Tamil Nadu governance.

Nothing remains to be known about whether this may be institutionalized or merely an isolated gesture. But for the weary commuters of Chennai, the sight of the buses and the cars moving along alongside a CM’s convoy, undiminished, with no push to halt is a relief — and a hopeful indicator that ordinary convenience may end up mattering more than ceremonial privilege at last.
