Tamil Nadu is currently going through a crucial election campaign today, October 6, 2026, as polling is currently happening in two Assembly constituencies — Madurantakam and Dharapuram. The elections are by-elections and not a state-wide election, and are being closely watched because they come just months after the 2026 elections in Tamil Nadu.
The polling began at 7 am and will continue until 6 pm in the two constituencies. The Election Commission has scheduled counting of votes for October 9.
Which Tamil Nadu seats are voting today?
The two constituencies going to polls are 35-Madurantakam (SC) and 101-Dharapuram (SC). Both are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.
The vacancies were created after AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel of Madurantakam and P Sathyabama of Dharapuram resigned. Both joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a party led by the Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
Four-Cornered Contest
The bypolls will have TVK, DMK, AIADMK, and CPI candidates, making the contests important for the state’s main political forces.
According to All India Radio, Madurantakam has 27 candidates while Dharapuram has 30 candidates in the race. The large number of candidates adds another dimension to the electoral battle, but the main focus will be on the major parties.
Why today’s poll is important for TVK?
The bypolls are particularly significant to the TVK government as they are one of the first major electoral tests after forming government.
Political observers will watch whether the party can convert the momentum from the 2026 Assembly election into support in particular constituencies. The outcome might also provide an early indication of how voters are reacting to the new government.
The New Indian Express described the contests as a challenge for Chief Minister Vijay as the new political equations in Tamil Nadu begin taking shape.

Voter numbers and polling arrangements
In Madurantakam, 2,12,639 voters are eligible to vote at 268 polling stations. Dharapuram has 2,22,406 electors voting at 282 polling stations, according to the state election administration.
Authorities have arranged peaceful polling, and voters can also use official election services to check their electoral-roll details and polling station information.
When will Tamil Nadu bypoll results be announced?
The votes cast today will be counted on October 9, 2026. The Election Commission's official schedule says the election process must be completed by October 11.
The results will be closely watched not only for the constituencies but also for the political signals they may send about Tamil Nadu’s new ruling arrangement.
For now, the voters in Madurantakam and Dharapuram are exercising their franchise in what is an important early test of the state's post-Assembly election political landscape.
